This is my third historical novel. It is set in the Netherlands in a town where I lived for a short time, and which I discovered to have a fascinating history. Places that capture my interest can often spark my imagination and provide a starting point for my writing. I find myself wondering what sort of people might have lived here in the past, and a story begins to emerge. My two previous novels were set in C18th Venice and the north of England during the Civil War Period. Details of these together with a collection of short stories with historical settings can be found at historical-novels.co.uk

A really good read! Gripping from the first pages - believeable characters and an interesting setting for this story. Rosemar'ys books are always enjoyable and set in different places so are varied in appeal. This one is set in a gin maker's town in Holland.

Rosemary Sturge tells a compelling tale with great skill, weaving interesting characters into the fabric of this atmospheric mystery. Set in Schiedam, Holland's notorious gin-soaked city around 150 years ago, this piece of well-researched social history has skilful descriptions of people and places reminiscent of Dickens. But above all this novel is a thoroughly entertaining read from the first page; the young trio of Tomas, Saskia and Caspar are delightful, as is the fake schoolmaster Hans Mulder.. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
