Hunter's work in 'BLACK LIGHT' rightly drew comparisons with Faulkner and Dostoevsky. With the twin plot lines running concurrently, Bob's investigation and his father, Earl's final days, we peel away the layers of the two men and the world around them. Bob and Earl are both men tormented by their past, by terrible burdens of guilt. Both have been to war, and have seen and done terrible things. Both are drawn to violence and the threat of imminent extinction. Haunted and restless, both men are outsiders driven by their own code. Both men are ruthless killers, men of principle, but also men of the gun. As their lives unravel, they come into their own, as both stories conclude in a welter of bloodshed.
Probably Hunter's greatest work, going beyond mere action-thriller and crime novel into the realms of true literature. A key work in the Swagger series and an overlooked masterpiece in modern writing. Writing with brains, and heart.

Dam its hard to choose a favourite, when it comes down to it. Who would you rather have watching your back in a tight spot? Earl-Lee or Bob-Lee, father or son? The series of books From Hot Springs to Time to Hunt seem to come to a climax in Black Light, making Time to Hunt seem like a bit of an afterthought. Hot Springs and Pale Horse are pure Earl-Lee Swagger. Point of Impact and Time to Hunt are Bob-Lee Swagger, but Black Light fuses the series together with the wild card book Dirty White Boys. If you're getting into Hunter and the Swaggers, don't read this book first, it will spoil everything. Its got everything, if this book was a person it would be the guy who invented booze. Read it or regret it.

We bought this book as a gift for my dad. He doesn't read much fiction but said he thought he might be interested in books by Stephen Hunter as he enjoyed the film Shooter. He enjoyed reading this book and Point of Impact.

My husband has read everyone of the swagger books and passed them on to me as I love action films and novels. You don't particularly have to know a lot about guns, bullet sizes etc to just enjoy how this story unfolds. Hunter gives you a real sense of history and the attention to detail really draws you in, the characters are intriguing and believable.
It's best to read the previous books by him as Black Light will then gel Bob and Earl's story together and make more sense. So you don't have to be a bloke to enjoy Hunters books ! stick with it and you really won't be able to put it down once you start reading !!

This book has everything you'd expect of a traditional Anmerican thriller, a strong silent hero with his own ghosts and code of conduct, a likeable side-kick, suspense, pace, some violence, some political intrigue and a twist at the end. It was well written and the characters and plot were believable.
The unwilling hero fights against all odds to uncover who killed his father. I liked the use of flash-backs to the fifties and think the atmosphere of the era was well described. I admit I did skip the technical details about guns and their uses, but other than that a gripping story, where the hero was well matched by the villians.
