Vinyl as muddy as CD
on 16 July 2016
First off this is not a review of the album itself - that's five stars - it's Muse at their most pompous and coherent with their Queen and Tchaikovsky roots. Musically I love this album.
So let's move on to the nitty- gritty of the recording and mastering quality.
In a word - s***e. Howie Weinberg has compressed this ( on CD ) to 4db dynamic range on most tracks, although to be fair the mix probably came like that. On vinyl it's as muddy, murky and unpleasant as on CD but it can be driven louder and I did hear some layered vocals I'd not picked out before on my Linn/Naim setup. The lp itself is on 180 gram vinyl which is nice but there's noise on Hoodoo which is poor pressing probably worn stampers tsk tsk!
Anyway there's a bit more on vinyl but clearly the massively compressed masters are the same so grab the CD, get over the appalling sound quality because the album still manages to shine through.
