Sometimes I wonder why so many books are written about finding purpose and meaning in life. But when I sometimes travel on a commuter train into London, I realise that never enough books on this topic are to be written.
Unfortunately most of the people that should read this book, don't. This means it won't help them. I will therefore do the best I can to promote this book. And in particular to those who hate the job and sector they are working in, which I believe are far too many. That is not what life is all about.
Isaiah has written a very clear and easy to read book on finding your purpose. He is a scientist, so referencing is done throughout the book, but in a good way. Most of the books and material Isaiah is referring to, are best-sellers in their own right.
Further the book is easy to read because of the short chapters. This will give you time to think about your own situation, which makes this book even better.

So are you currently doing stuff in life that doesn't really give you a spark or buzz, read this book. I might help you to get your spark back!

Or if you are buzzing and you want to re-confirm it. This is a great to book to test yourself.

Highly recommended.

As self-help books go this is a well-written and well enough presented one- the narrative is sharp and the chapters snappy- although it does of course as with so many of the thousands of examples in a now thoroughly over-crowded genre, tread over well worn ground. Also as is so often the case, these books become little more than a self-promotion exercise for the writer, and this one's no exception.

Putting jaded cynicism aside however, this is an undemanding and genuinely at times motivating read delivered with a fair degree of no-nonsense panache. It's very US-orientated in it's style and ticks the usual boxes demanded these days of lifestyle/employment self-help- a bit of pseudo-buddhist thought here, some emotional intelligence and cognitive therapy technique there- but on the whole palatable enough and gives some useful pointers, although at the end of the day I found it difficult to not think of it as ultimately disposable. But perhaps that is a true sign of the times...

The first section of the book seems to start a little slow. It talks about why you need a purpose and why focusing your life is important. The problem was that it seemed pretty theory-driven which made me concerned that the whole book would be theoretical. But then things picked up. The second section was very real and practical and provided a step-by-step system for figuring out what was important to me and what my strengths were. The third section was my favorite though because it showed me how to achieve all of the goals that I set in the second section. I really enjoyed all the science in the book too, like how our reticular activating system controls our awareness and how we only have a certain number of decision-making units. Very great stuff for any entrepreneur, university student, or coach.

This stuff ain't rocket science. But it is still fascinating. And mighty useful. And it can help to drill down into your most treasured beliefs and perspectives and motivations. The author's amiability combines well with the utility of his system, which involves a significant amount of self-questioning and honesty. What he doesn't do, which many self-help gurus tend to, is impose his beliefs on the reader. It is perfectly possible for readers with wildly differing - or even polar opposite - beliefs to adapt Hankel's methods of focusing for their own ends. But the exercises involved do require a certain amount of commitment. Don't expect your world to be transformed overnight. But over time, do expect major shifts in your behaviours and self-narratives if you follow Hankel's advice.

An interesting book written by an academic on how to find your purpose in life. The book is aimed at 'Intelligent People' which I found a little off putting. Does that mean that if I'm not intelligent it doesn't work for me?

The author is as enthusiastic as a labrador puppy about his subject, and gives life stories of other 'intelligent' people who have used his method to improve their working lives when they get to the top of the academic tree and find it's not quite what they wanted.

In truth the book could be used by anyone who has found the working life at a bit of a dead end, and the enthusiasm with which the book is written is catching and endearing.

I have read literally hundreds of books purporting to provide help with focus, personal and business success, and daily life.

This is one of the few that actually delivers.

Helping to identify your purpose, strategy and approach is only the start - the book is choc full of ideas to stretch your mind, keep you moving forward and destroy obstacles.

I really enjoyed this book and - more importantly, implemented many of the suggestions.

Highly recommended - but only if you are prepared to take action!

Well written, motivational, and inspiring, are some of the words I would use to describe this book. After reading it, realization of my environment set in, and new focus was formulated to achieve personal and career goals in life. The personal stories along with various case studies written in the book laid down the foundation for my own strategy. Moreover, the mental exercises described really help put things in perspective, at least for me. This is a great book for anyone who is completing or completed graduate work and finds themselves asking of "Whats next?" Similar to Rocky or any other inspirational movies out there, I would consider Black Hole Focus as literary motivation written to raise your spirit and change your attitude. Great Book!
