Having seen this band almost 20 times since 1990 I am firmly in the congregation of the church of the crowes...nothing will ever capture the ambience of a live Crowes gig...(I was at the Mean Fiddler for the 'secret' Amorica gig for example)...however, this is a more than worthy tribute to Kerrangs own 'greatest rock n roll band in the world'. Chris's almost naff on stage soliquies are captured at their rambling best and the extended versions of what probably list as their greatest hits are a welcome change from the studio versions of the same..very much for the purists but if you are pure crowes like me then if this wasn't top of your 02 christmas list, then it must be top of your 03 birthday list!!!

The Black Crowes Live is exactly what you'd expect from this band. At times as tight as a drum and at others loose and free. I don't know if this live album has been subjected to studio overdubs as so many have, but it doesn't feel as if it has. As with many live albums this should not be considered as being an ideal entry point for new BC fans, but for those who miss their brand of sleazy Stones inspired rock merged with a fair dose of laid back west coast noodlings, its a great reminder of how damn good they were.

I first saw The Black Crowes as a support band to the legendary Dogs D'amour(not)at the Glasgow Barrowlands sometime in the late 80's. that hearalded a love affair with -in my opinion -the best band ever to come from America. Cut to about 5 or 6 years later, same venue, the tour to support the AMORICA album and a performance that will live with me till the day I drop-ask anybody who was there that night. Cut to 1995 supporting the STONES, Wembley stadium, rain stopped play after 3 songs-not there finest moment. Cut present day and a live album that ranks among the best.Chris Robinson vocals now have a maturity that extracts every ounce of passion and emotion.
The Bluesy Zep-esque sound's beauty is in its subtlety rather than its extravagantance.Stand out tracks for me, "High Head Blues" and "She talks to angels" ,two tracks that show robinson at his angst ridden best. Some may moan about the sound Quality, but thats the beauty of live albums.Put The Black Crowes on your list of "Must see live before I die".

This is a great live double album, and is recommended to all Crowes fans, and fans of great live rock 'n' roll music!
A varied setlist, great segues and marked deviation from the studio versions of the tunes make this a really worthwhile live collection - let's just hope it isn't the last we hear from the greatest rock 'n' roll band of the last decade!

The Black Crowes are one of the finest live acts ever to tread a board and they rightly attracted a great reputation for some inspired live shows, particularly those which featured the guitar interplay between Marc Ford and Rich Robinson.

Thsi album was recorded after Ford's departure and whilst his replacement, Audley Freed is accomplished in hitting notes, he lacks the soul and feeling of his predecessor. Anyone wanting to hear a decent live album could buy this and probably get an indication of how good the Crowes could be. If you want to hear a much better performance, then head for the more recent "Freak and Roll Into The Fog" recorded during Marc Ford's return and much more in tune with the real live Crowes experience...

Having listened to the crowes since before my age was into doulbe figure's, i'll definatley count myself as an amorican. As a final heave ho to the band this is respectful. Track's range from across the crowes board and Chris is on form with the audience even if he still want's to come across as a black dude, there are few who are so clearly dedicated to their groove. It's the poor sound that let's this down though, the crowes ever present guitar work rarely coming into clarity and vocals pale by comparison to the Jimmy page live cd, amazing when you consider that Rich Robinson put this cd together. Still, when you have extended versions of midnight..., miricle to me, black moon creeping, high head blues and soul singing let's look on the bright side. Get their Jimmy page live cd for the real hit though
