The story..A maniac is on the loose brutally killing young women. First the victim is injected with a venom so they are paralyzed but conscious before being slowly killed. Meanwhile a detective is on the trail of the killer.
This 1971 giallo really is of the highest quality and superior in all departments. The direction is ultra stylish and the build up to many of the deaths is outstanding filled with suspense and photographed superbly. It's not consistently high on gore but when it does come it's bloody and quite nasty and there's a decent score by the master Ennio Morricone. The story is good and always interesting and the cast is also impressive with the likes of Giancarlo Giannini, Barbara Bouchet and Barbara Bach.

Conceptually and in terms of narrative this is a fairly formulaic and unadventurous Giallo. I'd lost interest in who the killer was by the end, for example. Yet what the film lacks in these areas it more than makes up for with it's consummate and occasionally jaw-dropping cinematography that oozes style and aplomb. It's technically so good that I actually struggled to believe it was made in 1972 - the clarity of the imagery is razor sharp.

Paulo Cavara throws in plenty of dynamic flourishes that keep you rivetted. The pace of the film is well managed and there is a lot of scenic variation and tone. For lovers of visually oriented cinema this is a must see.

A murderer is going around killing all the women who seem to have been unfaithful or in one case taking drugs, but the way he kills his victims is very unique, first he injects them with poison which Paralyzes them, then while they are still alive he cuts them up, slowly.

Giancarlo Giannini is great as inspector Tellini, who is asigned to solve this peculiar case. He seems to have more depth to his character than any of the other typical Giallo inspectors. His character doesn't think himself good enough to solve these brutal murders but he is persuaded to continue by his loving wife.

The film is mostly directed well by Paolo Cavara, but some scenes I felt were to typical and easy to predict what was going to happen. The weird music score is by Ennio Morricone and I have to say I wasnt that impressed by it but it is still good enough. The story is well paced and has enough tense moments to keep the viewer intrested.

Overall this is a good Giallo, that isnt quite as good as the best of the genre but it is by far better than the worst.

One of my top 5 fav Italian giallos-not as blood thirsty as most giallos but a good serial killer story-this version is a great quality transfer but what makes this movie for me is Ennio Morricone's great haunting music track-def one of his very best.
