Product Description

New recordings, made in Morway. To make a long story short: these are Red's best recordings since his fabulous 1960s sides for Roulette. He's in the mood to play, he sounds mean and powerful, both as guitar player and vocalist. Superb band, great recording. One of the best traditional style electric blues albums I have heard in years! Highly recommended. LOUISIANA RED - gtr/voc, LITTLE VICTOR - gtr/hca, WILLIAM TROIANAI - upright bass, ROBERT ALEXANDER PETTERSEN - drums. Special guests: KIM WILSON - hca, BOB CORRITORE - hca, DAVID MAXWELL - pno, REIDAR LARSON - pno, THE HAWK -gtr, JOSTEIN FORSBERG - hca.

Louisiana Red born Iverson Minter is a true giant of the blues who inspires everyone he plays with or listens to him by the sheer depth and emotion of his performances! Being fortunate enough to have played with many of the great blues masters like Muddy Waters & John Lee Hooker etc... we get to feel their spirits as they pour over into 12 of his own original's on 'Back to the Black Bayou'!

Louisiana Red plays guitar & vocals whilst Little Victor... a long time admirer of Red's gets to produce this gem as well as play guitar and harmonica along with Robert Alexander Pettersen on drums and Bill Troiani on upright bass! Add Kim Wilson, Bob Corritore & Jostein Forsberg on harp, Dave Maxwell & Reidar Larsen on piano, The Hawk on guitar & Peter Lundell on Percussion and you have one hell of a groove!

'Back to the Black Bayou' is the album you have always wanted to own... either to listen to or get down with as each track is a living history of the blues that you will enjoy reliving with every beat of your heart!

With his recent cds being at best average this new issue is an unexpected gem. In terms of quality this is very reminiscent of his early 60s recordings and the line up of two guitars, harmonica, piano, bass and drums recalls the best ensemble sounds of Chicago in the heyday of the Wolf, Muddy, etc. With only two tracks breaking the 4 minute barrier every track remains succinct and focussed. This is straight blues with no "nods" to rock, soul or whatever; fans of real blues can buy with confidence.

It's 2009 and I cannot believe that The Man can produce a classic to beat all his previous .....but he can! In my opinion this is his best even without 'Valerie'. Great in all respects...writing, performance and production. Best modern blues since the Kimbrough stuff. His voice is still superb and the backing band are exceptional.

HASH(0x8dd7bfa8) out of 5 stars Old School Blues Celebration 20 April 2009
By 6 String Guy - Published on Amazon.com

This is great music. Though a 2009 release, this could have been recorded anytime in the last 50 years. This has the feel of the old Sun Studios recordings and is filled with fine guitar, harp and lots of terrific, gritty, raw electric music. Red wrote all of the tunes on this one and incorporates some of his life experiences as he has in the past. I enjoyed every track on this CD.

Red has played with many of the greats over the years and those influences are present here as Muddy and Elmore James seem to be lurking in the background with a guiding spirit and I'm pretty sure Howlin Wolf would be smiling at this one, as well. If you like your blues downhome and rockin', try this one out and don't be surprised if you play it a few times in a row. Beautiful stuff and thanks to Ruf Records for putting this cracking good CD out.

HASH(0x8cb3ed20) out of 5 stars Excellent Modern Blues Album With Oldschool Flair 7 July 2010

Red's nearly 80 years old and can still whoop some major tail! Back to the Black Bayou is Red re-recording some of his old tunes in slight variation to the originals. He's backed by a great band which includes producer Little Victor, giving the album a dual guitar sound. The album was recorded in Norway(!), but you'd never guess as it sounds like you're sitting in a smokey New Orleans nightclub. Great stuff, very rowdy and rockin' blues. Not a bad track in the bunch.
Along with BB King, Red is one of the few blues greats from back in the day that's still active, and age hasn't hindered him a bit, maybe even made him sound sharper. The proof's on this cd, which I'd highly recommend to anyone who digs the blues.

Another good Louisiana Red outing, similar to Milennium Blues and his other best material.
