Pippa's a fabulous heroine and just what Toby needed. I've read so many NA books where the characters irritate the hell out of me with the juvenile drama, not so in Bittersweet Always. Not even the seperation bothered me, it was essential and pivotal to the story for Toby to be able to heal and grow.
Although Bittersweet Always is a lot heavier than Suddenly Forbidden I really liked it, way more than I thought I would when I first started it.
Toby’s behaviour and thinking can be quite erratic and manic so when he spots Pippa and he feels a quietness that’s rare for him, he’s determined to win over the woman who’s caught his eye. Toby is such a wonderfully complex character. While he’s not broken he’s definitely a little bent out of shape. When he’s having a good day, he’s fun and sweet, he’s the kind of guy you’d love to spend time with but when he’s low he’s self destructive and can’t find a way out of his head. I really got the feeling of how mentally and emotionally draining it must be to live day to day while trying to deal with it all.
I loved Pippa. Having dealt with her own troubles in her past, she’s a surprisingly strong woman who says what she thinks and has a fierce attitude. She never had any intention of falling for Toby but love had other ideas. To be honest I don’t think anyone else but Pippa could handle Toby. For every high there’s a low and Pippa is just stubborn enough to stick them out.
Like I said at the start I was desperate for Toby’s story and I was hooked from the start. There was a point where the story seemed to slow down but then it picked back up again and I couldn’t stop reading even if I’d wanted to.
I adored Toby. My heart broke for not only him but Pippa too and I thought Ella Fields dealt with a very sensitive subject in a very well thought out and sensitive way. She managed to get the balance right between the highs and the lows, the despair and the hope, the regrets and strength of character it takes to try and accept help, the effects things have not only to the people who are going through it but also their loved ones and friends. This really is an amazing story with fantastic characters that I definitely would recommend.
I've been waiting for this book since reading Suddenly Forbidden. There was so much about Toby that I wanted answers to and I got them. Actually, I got a lot more than I'd been waiting for and oh boy the emotions it pulled from me...
Toby and Pippa really got to me, even more than I thought they would. From someone who'd met them while reading Daisy and Quinn's story and first fell in love with them then, I had no idea how much more they'd make me feel, that they would make my heart so much and make liquid fall from my eyes.
These two were very special. They were both dealt a crappy hand, which made it all the more special to see them rise above everything that happened, to them and between them.
Toby has mental health issues and they get in the way of his life, they make him act a certain way, looking for a relief that gets him intro trouble. When things get harder for him, he tends to act up and meanwhile he hurts Pippa, even if unintentionally. He looks for a relief from his demons in the wrong place, in things that will only make it worse and Pippa just wants him to get real help but Toby's pride stops him from doing so.
Pippa's love for Toby is so big, so strong that she almost forgets to love herself. But having watched her mother deal with the same issue with Pippa's dad and having that insight makes her realize that she needs to put herself first, no matter how much she loves and cares for Toby. It backfires on her. Toby gets worse and that ends up hurting her, and him, even more. Boy, this part put me through the ringer. It was so heartbreaking.
This story was very emotional, very important and just amazing beyond words. Pippa and Toby will bring you on a journey of love, true friendship and learning to get/accept help when it's needed. This book was remarkable and you should definitely give it a read. Be prepared to shed a couple of tears though. I sure teared up a couple of times.
I love this gang! Pippa and Daisy's friendship is goals. And I also love the bromance between Toby and Quinn and a couple of their other team mates. They're a nice and sweet tight knighted group.
