Biting the Stick is narrated by Tania, who witnesses, on the campus where she works, a little girl being genitally mutilated. What seems like a straightforward moral imperative - to inform the authorities - is undermined as different people, of different cultures, raise increasingly complex viewpoints of the brutal practice, and as the lives of more and more people are affected by Tania's decisions. Tania, whose marriage is disintegrating and whose father is dying, learns a great deal of information about female genital mutilation, which is seamlessly woven into the story of her own life and its fragilities. The compelling - and at times startlingly funny - narrative will leave readers wanting to find out more about the unfortunately common custom of fgm while discovering how Tania's story is resolved.

'Biting the Stick' highlights a taboo subject of which I had little knowledge. The novel is well researched and the subject sympathetically dealt with. The story is told through the eyes of Tania, a woman struggling with her own family crises. Her father is terminally ill and her marriage is breaking down. Whilst working as a counsellor at a London university, she encounters a female genital mutilation ceremony. What she sees haunts her throughout the rest of the novel as she struggles to decide what action she should take. Although the subject matter is horrendous, the book is a real page turner as you wonder what Tania will do and begin to question your own conscience in asking how you would handle the same situation. Definitely recommended reading!

Susannah Carlton's book is not for sissies, but is one of the very best I've read in a long time . I am usually a very slow reader , but I finished this book in 2 days , finding it hard to put down when I should have been turning my lights off at night .

In addition to the highly disturbing and gut wrenching issues of fgm , Ms. Carlton explores other important matters -- religious practices and prejudice , betrayal, abandonment , universal conscription--interweaving a group of brilliantly written and provocative themes throughout the book with great style and skill .

Biting the Stick is not an easy read , but it is not to be missed . I cannot recommend it strongly enugh

This book challenges the reader around notions of responsibility and conscience. We all like to think we would do the right thing, but in a complex world it isn't so easy.
A difficult subject, but Susannah Carlton writes with a panache that keeps you turning the page.
Highly recommended!
