While a techie may find the explanations lacking depth, this book is meant more for the general population who want to understand what all of the hype is about in order to make a more informed decisions on whether to take a flyer on investing and trading in Bitcoins. Suggestions on safeguards in dealing with Bitcoins are touched upon, and there is a brief discussion of the benefits and possible negatives of jumping into the Bitcoin world.
There are plenty of pointers to outside sources for more information on mining or storing Bitcoins for those who want to investigate further, but I would have liked a little more information included in the book itself, especially in the area of places that accept Bitcoins as payment. As someone with a technical background, I would have appreciated more pointers to sources for the technical and security issues involved with the creation of Bitcoins since that level of detail was beyond the scope of this book, perhaps as a selected bibliography listing at the end of the book.
There are other virtual currencies out in the cyberworld besides Bitcoin, and the concept has been tried in the past with poor results; however, with Bitcoin being the most talked about of the various currencies these days, this book will give the reader a place to start in their understanding about Bitcoin specifically and of the general principles of virtual currencies and how they operate.
This book, as the title says, starts with the basics. It does not assume any previous knowledge on the part of the read and takes the reader from introduction upward. For the first time I feel that I understand the subject and that I can now go on to intermediate and advanced level books on this subject.
The book will not make you a wizard in this subject, because it is a basics book, but it will give you sufficient basics to help you to go to the next higher step. If Bitcoins have puzzled you, then here is the book to start with. Highly recommended!
The book starts with the basics and does not assume you have any previous knowledge. The one thing it truly lacked was an explanation on mathematics. Having an advanced technical degree, I would have liked to get a better understanding of this. The author talks about the mining of the Bitcoins by solving mathematical encryption puzzles and that it is these puzzles that provide the security for the Bitcoin network. However, he never really explains how these puzzles do this. I’m not certain that the author actually knew the rationale behind this and that might be why it was not addressed.
This is a basics book and most people probably do not care about the math. So if you are new to Bitcoin, I recommend reading this.
I have been on the look out for a simple guide to bitcoin that I could share with other people who are not as tech-savvy as me.
Finally, I think that I have found it in this little book.
Bitcoin Basics is simple and so it's not really geared towards the techie reader, but it really covers everything that the non-techie person would want to know in order to get going with bitcoin. I strongly recommend this book, especially if you are new to bitcoin and you want to learn how to use it!
