In this 2001 light hearted crime romance [aka: Nadia], meek mannered and socially awkward bank clerk John Buckingham (Ben Chaplin), orders a Russian Internet bride Nadia (Nicole Kidman) but soon discovers she cannot speak English while John cannot speak Russian, however they soon bond. But what other secrets is the extrovert Nadia hiding?
This has a number of interesting twists, mainly early on and the premise is a good one, but the execution flawed, yet remarkably entertaining. Kidman excels in her role, although the fake Russian accent does raise a smile or two and the dark humour runs throughout..
The single disc offers play, extras [commentary, cast& crew interviews, trailer, music video, behind the scenes, also available.], scene index and subtitles on/off. Although a 15 rating this features some sexual acts, bondage, some swearing and physical violence, which surpasses some 18 ratings, although it is all low key stuff and usually done as part of the humourf. The pace is quick and there is never a dull moment, this turns out a surprise view and well worth a try.

Ben Chaplin plays John, a St. Albans bank clerk whose life is turned upside down when he orders a Russian mail-order bride from the Internet. When the mysterious and beautiful Nadia (Oscar winner Nicole Kidman) arrives, John is shocked to discover that she speaks no English - but he soon falls in love with the sexy stranger. When Nadia's Russian 'cousins' unexpectedly show up on her birthday, John fast realises he's got a whole lot more than he bargained for... From the director Jez Butterworth, Birthday Girl is a sexy comic thriller starring Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, The Hours), Ben Chaplin (The Truth about Cats & Dogs, The Thin Red Line), Vincent Cassel (Elizabeth) and Matthieu Kassovitz (Amelie).

I felt that there was something missing watching Birthday Girl. There is some good acting at times from the all the cast especially the “Russians” but with a simple and somewhat predictable plot, this comedy drama was not what I was expecting – having read reviews on amazon before buying it.
I hoped that it might have been well acted (which it was), funny (which, and given the subjective nature of comedy it wasn’t very, for me), dramatic (which it mostly wasn’t), enjoyable (which it was – just) and memorable (which it was – but probably for the wrong reasons).
There is an optional commentary on the DVD by director Jez Butterworth and actor Ben Chaplin and it gives an interesting insight into how the film came about. For example the use of non-Russian speaking actors so as not to intimidate Nicole Kidman and indeed all three “Russians” gave good performances. But Butterworth and Chaplin also talk about how long the film took to make and the use of different locations and even using different continents to shoot the same location and often many months apart. This is not unusual in making a film, but I do wonder if in this case, that the time it took to make the film is what contributed to the “something that is missing” in Birthday Girl for me.
As well as the main feature the DVD comes with:
Commentary featuring Director Jez Butterworth and Ben Chaplin
Cast and Crew Interviews
Trailer
Music Video “Something Stupid” featuring Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman
Behind The Scenes
Also Available
As other reviewers have stated, Birthday Girl is a film that will not be to everyone’s taste and although I wouldn’t discourage anyone from watching it I couldn’t recommend it either.

This is an interesting film, and nice to see the beautiful Nicole Kidman in a low-budget British film.
Plot: a single man orders a bride-to-be ('mail order') from Russia. She arrives, not speaking any English. He starts to fall in love with her, but it turns out that she's part of a criminal gang (who turn up at the blokes house, seeking to rob a bank). Nonetheless, she ends up falling for the guy who 'mail ordered' her ... It's a weird tale of love.
It put me off ordering a bride from Russia!
Good fun for 1hr 30mins. But I doubt I'll be re-visiting this film again in the near future.

... if you like this kind of film then you'll like this - sounds silly but if you didn't like Wimbledon for instance don't bother with this. It is British comedy and as such the plot is very much grounded in the idea of every day life gone a little bit awry, I suppose you could call it a farce of sorts.
Nicole Kidman is absolutely brilliant in this, but then so is the lead actor, but he's not as famous or as beautiful so I can't remember his name - that guy out of 'Game On' will have to suffice.
Also really great to see a French actor I recognise from some seriously odd non-English films (e.g. Irreversible) getting away with playing a Russian.
The UK locations as opposed to US locations (how many times do we have to see New York on film?) really give this comedy a kind of gritty realism. Obviously if you are outside the UK this won't work for you but you'll get a change to see a few bits of the UK not previously shown (i.e. outside London).

A very strange and unusual film. I enjoyed the film and the highly improbable outcome and well acted throughout. A bit of a male fantasy film in a way so not sure how much empathy there would be from the other sex. And mentioning sex there is some but not of the soft porn variety. If you're a man a good film to watch, if you are a woman I am not so sure (but not for me to presume what works for a woman and what doesn't!).
NK is a Russian bride with a difference as BC finds out to his cost and the first third of the film is about how their relationship appears to gel and the remainder is about the catch and its affects on BC.

quirky little film turns an idea upside down and the ending is fun - if a little hard to believe it would work
a little sex don't get too excited nothing to see
a little violence, again mainly threat (ably done)
a little tension but not too scary
you get the idea this is just enough without really being too adult

Brought it because I saw it several years ago and thought it was good. I was wrong! The passage of time can deceive the memory.

Very good picture. First of all, you are keeping on your seat awaiting what will happen next and then you wait again for the next and so forth; untill you realize that the how pleasant was this movie.
