This booklet has been prepared to try and make family historians first find and then make the most of the information provided by the birth and death certificates. It only relates to certifcates issued by the registration service in England and Wales. (Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands all have their own registration services which may differ significantly from the details discussed in this booklet.) In 1969 the format of the registers, and therefore the certificates issued from them changed considerably. This booklet is only relevant to the certificates issued from 1837 to 1969.
