This is the book which sits next to our kitchen sink so that we can look up anything seen in our own back garden. It also accompanies me whenever I am out and about in the country. If it is a small pocket guide you are seeking - then look no further.

Commencing with a few Basics, we then mover quickly on to How the Guide Works followed by a list of species included. Time spent on reading these introductory items is time well spent. All bird types are shown together commencing with the smallest (Firecrest) and working up to the larger birds with all seabirds included right at the end.

An excellent book.

Hi fellow birdwatchers,

This pocket sized guide measures 19cm high x 9cm wide. 272 pages of text and excellent colour drawings describe over 430 species of birds commonly encountered in the UK and Europe.

There are up to 12 colour illustrations per species with symbols enabling the reader to quickly identify the species. Birds groups are easily found quickly with assistance of colour coded page tabs .

This book is small, compact and will fit in all but the smallest of pockets and, whilst it is actually a paperback there is a thoughtfull plastic sleeve around the front and rear covers which keeps the book dry whilst out in the field!-other publishers take note!

The art work is stunning and is by the same artist that did a bigger book of the The birdlife of Britain.

Good value for money, informative, easy to use, fits in your pocket and it comes complete with its own raincoat!

Recommended! Enjoy, Bwana Foster.

I bought this book for my husband who's suddenly shown an interest in the birdlife around us when we moved out to the country. He keeps it on the windowsill to help him learn the names of the visitors to his bird table. It's an easy to use, comprehensive guide and information book which he finds very helpful to educate him in a field in which he had little or no knowledge.

This is a great book...good illustrations, and loads of informatrion....but either I've missed something, or there's a major problem....there's no reference to the size of the birds! I find that very odd.

really useful guide for birdwatchers, whether you already know a lot about ornithology or are a beginner. If you want to identify the birds in your garden this is a small book to keep around the house or will fit nicely in the pocket of a coat to take with you on bird watching outings.

If you only take one book out with you when you go walking / birdwatching I suggest that you take this one. Many images of each bird (in flight, perched, from behind, from above etc) it is the best one I have for identifying birds I'm not sure about and photograph.

I love it and bout it secondhand for little more than the cost of P&P :)

VERY HAPPY with it.

I now own three copies of this book (bought 'used' for a few pence + postage) one in my camera bag, one in the car and one for spare :)

We are not "Twitchers", but this is our 2nd copy. 1 for home, 1 for the car. Contains several alternative images for each bird. The best book that we have come across for anyone taking more than a passing interest in the birds in the UK. An excellent buy.

Bought as a gift for a keen bird watcher who seems very pleased with it. Not the latest edition but as far as I am aware birds have not changed their plumage or habits recently - hence I suppose the reduced price.
