Product Description

Review

One word sums my opinion about this book- awesome! I currently own this one and the course companion by Andrew Allott and I have to say this book is so much better. The first thing I like about this book is that the diagrams are in colour... Secondly, when explaining a process, the book gives both a flow diagram of the process and sentence descriptions. I find that this enhances my understanding of everything so much more. (Student, IB Damned site)

This is the my favourite Biology book which I have come across so far. There is masses of information that is all very useful and easy enough to understand... Diagrams in the book are also very helpful for helping to explain some trickier things like The Krebs Cycle. I would recommend this book to all Biology Students, both at Standard Level and Higher Level. (Student, IB Damned site)

This book is for the "old" syllabus. So what?
This book has options on CD in the back rather than printed. So what?
The book has color pictures and diagrams. So what?

I am an IB SL & HL biology teachers and in my opinion, this book is simply the best biology textbook for IB available anywhere for any price! I first got a hold of this as a sample text based on one students' review of it ("the best IB text fo biology ever" etc.) but I expected little. I have chosen text books for the past 13 years and been saddled with a lot of rubbish because available quality is so low. But NOT CLEGG! This book is comprehensive; well written; and what rockets this past any other book are the brilliant "illustrations" in the test. They are detailed, clear, well annotated and ultimately support independent learning.

My primary texts for my students are: (1) Clegg (for clarifying or teaching content.) (2) Allott's "tiger" text for practicing DBQ questions (new edition contains partial key - thank God!) and (3) Biozone's "Senior Biology 1" & 2. They are brilliant, focused, highly graphic workbooks.

Finally: I love Amazon; they have changed the face of retailing! But ... they charge substantial fees for shipping. Enter "The Book Depository" in UK - which ships for free ... WORLDWIDE! (I live in Korea and receive texts and books for NO SHIPPING COST. Ok Amazon; get on it and offer free shipping. The ball is in your court now :)

I bought Biology on behalf of my daughter who is doing the IB. She is very happy with it particularly as her teacher does not always cover all she needs to know.

The book was sent to South Africa. It was poorly packed and a a result slightly damaged when it arrived. Don't expect fast delivery (unless you ask for it). Took over a month to arrive.

This textbook covers the current IB Biology syllabus at both Standard and Higher Level, including all of the options. In the version I use all of the materials that relate to the Options section of the syllabus are presented on a CD ROM, although no mention of this seems to be made in the product description here. My experience is that printing out the relevant Option section from the CD ROM is a good idea as it allow for annotation of the text.
The syllabus coverage is very good, with coloured boarder stripes being used to indentify Standard and Higher Level materials. As a textbook this is clearly aimed at the IB in schools, as opposed to books such as Campbell which are widely used for Higher Level IB, which seem to be aimed at the Undergraduate market. Some people have suggested that coverage in some areas may be a little "light" for higher level, but this is not a problem as far as I am concerned.
This book is a significant advance on some of the books published in the past, which were intended as revision guides but were used as text books. As a textbook I recommend it.

Clegg's 'Biology for the IB Diploma' covers virtually every aspect in good detail and is concisely written. Having followed the IB Biology HL course myself, I can say that this is the best book available; After spending long hours to find a better book than my first one, the 'Biology Course Companion', which I used before and which is surely not sufficient to get you through the exams, I found this one. It delivers what it promises, however, there is one important detail everyone needs to be aware of: The additional HL topics are on a CD in 'pdf' format, therefore, if you don't like reading, learning and revising from a computer screen, you have to print it out in colour (because of the diagramms), which would be about 100 pages, depending on what topics you have studied.

All in all, I can say that you won't regret buying this book, because even though it is relatively expensive, it is really all you need for the IB Biology course (especially if you have HL and don't want to use several books for the same subject).
