I became aware of this book when a flyer was pressed into my hand on the way into Billys' concert at Wembley in June. I spoke to other Billy Joel fans at and after the concert and was advised those who had read it that I should also do so. They were right and I am grateful to them and of Jon Brett. Like him, a life long can of Billy this book proved beyond doubt for me that his songs speak to people, they way they speak to me. We all have our favourite and that's great. The interviews with band members past and present were informative without being salacious. The anecdotes of Jon and his wife as fans travelling to Billys home town Tec were humorous and self deprecating. The book also confirmed my impression of the British Billy - Eliot Pace as. Being an altogether great bloke too. Incidentally Elio and his band give a fantastic performance of Billys' music, if you haven't yet, seek them out. I finished the book in 2 sessions, engrossed as I was and have subsequently re-read it and enjoyed it all over again. Though I have not met Billy in person, this book does allow the reader some kind of vicarious experience through the experience of the author.
I've been a Billy Joel fan all my life and this book was full of astonishing stories, interviews and anecdotes that I have never read about him before. The interviews with former band members gave a fascinating glimpse into Billy's early days, while the contributions from current band members mean this book is bang up to date. The photos were also really interesting. This is more than just a biography and features contributions from loads of fans around the world. Billy Joel fans will love this book - and I reckon Billy himself would even like it too!
Not unlike the author I am a lifelong Billy Joel fan. I have often read previous biographies with disappointment in that they rarely have anything different to say.Jon Brett's new book has,at last, finally broken this mould. He has cleverly managed to blend narrative with personal encounters to provide a completely different perspective of Billy Joel's career.Great care has been taken to interview a collection of people and musician ,some of whom have never been interviewed before, who reveal new material and anecdotal stories about Billy Joel and their time playing with him. In addition,a combination of the author's personal journey as a fan, great photographs and wonderful comments from Billy Joel fans from around the world made this an absorbing read.I am definitely An Innocent Fan fan !
This is one of the most interesting books i've ever read about Billy Joel. Interspersed between interviews with band members and friends, past and present, we share Jon's experiences at Billy Joel concerts, meeting some of the people closest to Billy and his pilgrimage to Long Island to visit famous 'Billy Joel haunts' in an effort to meet the man himself. Jon's writing style is very easy to read, full of humour and i found out so much more about Joel than i ever read in any of the other biographies available. I also liked the little contributions from Billy Joel fans from around the world, that was a great touch! Congratulations Jon, i look forward to reading more of your work!
This was such a great read, I was so impressed with Jon and Sharon's adventure. They pursued their dream (well Jon's dream) and were very successful in my eyes. Loved all the background stories, the interviews and just the whole set up of the book. So informative and such a pleasure to read! Well done Jon, you nailed it. 👌
Its a really enjoyable and easy read. I love the story line being from the perspective of a life long fan rather then a regular biography. There are fascinating interviews with some of Billy's current and past band members and native NYC 'Long Islanders' who knew and grew up, with Billy Joel over the last 40 years, frequenting many of his old haunts including the authentic 'Italian Restaurant" !!
