The Tome of Bill is a fun series of comedy action fantasy novels that occasionally edge into mild horror. They're laugh out loud nerd-friendly comedy - think Big Bang Theory with Penny as a psychotic blood-drinker. I devoured the four books that comprise this collection over a couple of weeks of commuting - so they managed to hold their own against a three mile walk along the leafier banks of the Thames.

The tone grows fractionally more serious as events accelerate throughout the first four books, as Bill develops from being a snarky programmer and reluctant vampire, to become a snarky vampire and reluctant legendary being. But the humour never lets up, no matter how dark the night becomes. A lot of the gags are neither big nor clever, but they are consistently funny. My personal favourite, oddly, was the moment when Bill starts scrawling his name on bottles of blood in his fridge. Flatsharing brings out the passive aggressive side even of supernatural killers, it seems.

If I had one gripe about the presentation of this box set, however, it would be the "stuff at the end". There's a bonus short story, which is fair enough and a classy touch, even if the story stepped down way too many gears following the climactic events of Holier Than Thou. But then there's a series of fictional interviews with characters. Probably it's me with an axe to grind, but that kind of stuff bores the tits off me. Things that make a perfectly acceptable cute gimmick in a blog post probably don't merit inclusion in your book. There's nothing in them that you won't have already gleaned from reading the previous four novels, and... yeah. Sorry, Rick, but I'd hold that stuff back for the mailing list and stick to leaving readers on a storming high after Book 4.

I thought this started off very well, and was amused by it all.It was, I thought, a refreshing change.I like vampire stories, though I prefer M/M ones, but I thought I'd give this a go and was entertained through the first two books. But I have to agree with one reviewer who said that Bill got really annoying. He never changes, never learns from anything that happens, never gets smarter, nothing.
I kind of like my characters to develop, gain some insight, like we all do, hopefully.
I deleted the rest of the book.He got on my nerves too much.

Get your freak on, with the worlds oddest Vampire. Meet Bill. Computer nerd, self proclaimed geek, and the most recent recruit to the realm of the undead. Invited by Sally to an exclusive party, Bill cannot refuse, after all not everyone on the subway with a book of comics is approached by the hottest blonde in the station and asked to come up and see her sometime. Bill, though regrets that he did. This is not your average vampire story, but then again Bill is not your average vampire. Told across four fast paced and relentlessly shifting stories, Bill goes from the "fat geek", to the Legendary Freewill.Quite the funniest, yet scariest thing I've read since the late Terry Pratchett. Bill, you gotta love him!

This collection is a great introduction to the world of Bill, a computer programmer for a game company, and vampire. The first book, Bill the Vampire, introduces Bill to the New York vampire scene, and brings along a likable cast of characters, including his housemates, Tom and Ed, and the streetwise Sally, a vampire in the local coven. The next books see Bill dragged off to China, Canada, and back home as events spiral out of control. There is an overall story arc which is well integrated, and builds over the series here, and into the (currently) three further books following Bill, and two spin off books, Sunset Strip (following Sally, and fitting immediately after this series), and Shining Fury (taking place concurrently with book 7, The Wicked Dead).

They are also available with Whispersync, so you can get the audiobook versions for a little bit more. These are well read by Christopher John Fetherolf, who gives all the characters distinct, appropriate voices, and is engaging to listen to.

Loved it.

Sometimes you don't want fantasy epics, just a decent read with a few laughs in amongst the gutting and sucking. There's just enough snark in here to make it a fun read, and the giblets aren't excessively waived. It's a story of an overweight bespectacled computer programmer who gets to be in the wrong place and time, and ends up all bitey and sun-phobic. Add in a strong supporting cast (Sally his vampire sidekick is so dry with the putdowns) and it's a four piece that doesn't require too much brain power to read.

I'd load this up on my Kindle and take it on holiday (except I've read it and can't afford a holiday. Crap.)

Don't think this will be everyone's cup of tea (with a dash of plasma) but personally I couldn't stop reading them. I've nearly finished book 7.

Great characters.

It's a perfect mix of wit, fantasy, myth, silliness and geekdom.

I thought I would give these a go for holidays. not your normal vampire books, I found them so funny, So well written with Bill the main character still trying to keep his human feelings, while being a vampire. For an easy read I highly recommend these. cant wait to get the rest of the series.
