This is the perfect book for bike enthusiasts and for those are interested in style and design of one of the most eco-friendly means of transportation ever invented. Before looking through this beautifully photographed coffee table book, I had never imagined the variety of bikes that are produced around the world. Have you ever seen a bike that looks sort of like a Swiss Army Knife? There is one shown in this book called the Voltitude, produced by Voltitude S.A. of Switzerland. This thing even folds in half, much like the knife. Or how about the midnight-black CPH Street Night Bike with the spokes plated with 24-karat gold? Or the Gold Bike Crystal Edition where every component and every square millimeter is gold plated and the frame is adorned with 600 Swarovski crystals? These last two are made in Denmark. You may have guessed that these are mostly high-end machines but there are also several very practical models like the Tara Bicycle Stroller, made in The Netherlands that has a fully padded baby seat in front of the handlebars. The Smart Electric Bike made in Germany has it's own GPS mounted on the handlebars!

The book is divided into sections of Sport Bikes that include both off-road and road and touring bikes, Urban Bikes including commuter, cruisers, and folding bikes, Utility Bikes that will carry groceries, kids and the dog, E-Bikes, both classic and estrodinary, Accessories including bags, cases, helmets and apparel, Special & Concept Bikes in creative shapes, made of unusual materials and luxury bikes, and Creative Bike Storage that include decorative racks, multifunctional shelves and public bike parking.

This is a large (9-7/8 x 12-2/3 in.) of 220 pages, containing over 300 stunning color photographs.

HASH(0x8e3eb78c) out of 5 stars Great pictures; Inadequate information 10 Jan. 2014
By Vernon Forbes - Published on Amazon.com
Like most coffee-table books this is a moderately expensive book of photographs that is lacking any information to make it meaningful. This is an over-sized (12.5"x 10") collection of studio photographs of 74 different bicycles organized into chapters. Each bicycle is given a 2-pg spread with 2-4 studio photographs on large, full-size pages with a very brief description of under 100wds; usually 2-3 sentences of text given in three languages; English, French and German without ride reviews. You cannot say much about a bicycle in 2-3 sentences. Moreover, this book has no index and no websites are listed to find information. Many of the bicycles depicted are very high end low-production or only available as custom models. This book is not entirely without merit and has the largest collection of current production wood/bamboo bicycles available but does not include the Renovo, for some reason. This also has the largest collection of ebikes of any book. This company publishes a library of coffee-table titles emphasizing style over substance, such as:

-Luxury Toys: Top of the World (English, German, French, Italian and Spanish Edition)
-Cool Escapes: Top of the World
-The World of Private Islands (English, German, French, Spanish and Italian Edition).

Concerning this coffee-table book; there are 17 "Sport" or racing bikes, only 4 of which are mountain bikes. There are 22 "Urban" or fast commuting bikes, only 10 of which have fenders and 6 have racks or baskets. There are 6 Utility or cargo bikes, 12 Ebikes and 17 Special and Concept bikes. Most coffee-table books of bicycles tend to focus on ones that are unusual and eclectic (such as 100 Best Bikes or Cyclepedia: A Century of Iconic Bicycle Design). Rather than being another collection of strange bicycles the majority of bicycles in this collection are both practical and rideable. There are 61 of the 74 bikes are upright bicycles in titanium, carbon, wood and steel. There is 1 recumbent, 2 tandems, 3 tricycles, 8 folding bicycles, and 5 wood/bamboo bicycles, interestingly enough. Only 12 of the bikes shown have shock absorbers. The bikes included are:

SPORT BIKES
Hampsten Cycles, Bilenky collapsible tandem, Chris King, Cervelo, Calfee, Scott, Cinelli, Bianchi, Vandeyk, BMW, Storck, Goomah, Time, Haibike, Punch Cycles, Cannondale

URBAN BIKES
ADP Engineering, Public, Retrovelo, Pashley, Icarus, Hammarhead, Crème Bicycles,
Schindelhauer, Veloheld, Bishop Bikes, Pasculli, Townsend, Electra, Urbike, Bella Ciao, Bobbin Bikes, Paul Budnitz, Keith Anderson, Strida, Brompton, HP Velotechnik, Pacific Cycles, Bernds (2 models)

UTILITY BIKES
Christiana, Carryo, Johnny Loco, Faga, Umazooma, Workcycles

EBIKES
Smart, Karbon Kinetics, Voltitude, Raleigh, Daymak, My E-Bike.com, Juiced Riders, Grace, EBike, Third Element, Stealth Elecric Bikes, PG

SPECIAL AND CONCEPT BIKES
Qvick, Fritsch Dorisotti, Arndt, Gary Galego, Bambooride, Schwinn, Derringer Cycles, Juri Zaech "You name it" (this is a sign, not a bike), Vanhulsteijn, Moulton, Abici, Velorbis, Degrinder Cycle, Montante Cicli (2 models), Ben Wilson, Aurumania.

This is a large (9-7/8 x 12-2/3 in.) of 220 pages, containing over 300 stunning color photographs. If you're familiar with teNeues Publishing, you already know of their excellent quality books. The pages are heavy stock and written in English, French and German. The book is mostly photos with a paragraph or so describing each one. There are a few lines at the bottom of each page, telling the country where the bike was designed, the weight, gears, frame and brake information. This book would make a great gift for any bike enthusiasts on your list.

I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher for review.

HASH(0x8f258348) out of 5 stars Art, sport, technology, and passion 30 Sept. 2012
By wiredweird - Published on Amazon.com
This huge and beautiful volume offers an interesting glimpse into the huge world of bicycle culture - mostly into the very high end of it. It starts with touring bikes, some specialized for racing, some made from exotic materials like bamboo or carbon fiber (0.7kg frame? wow!). Other sections emphasize retro styling and fun colors, load-bearing practicality, or the needs of the urbanite. Motorized ebikes appear, as do some three-wheeled configurations for kids or cargo, two-rider models, off-road rides, and folding bikes for the commuter. Moving beyond pure practicality and engineering, a few feature gold plating or a solid crust of Swarovski crystals. More than the bikes themselves, this book also displays a few accessories for machine or rider, including some clever and elegant storage solutions.

A single paragraph (repeated in English, German and French) describes each one. Given the level of technology in some, that seems a bit thin. I'd certainly like to know more about the wood composite materials in one, or the complex and adjustable suspensions in others. The photos, though beautiful, sometimes skip over points of interest. When the text calls attention to welds in the frame, for example, pictures would have helped in understanding the welds' special qualities. And, except in a few cases, the rider and use of even specialized bikes get scant mention. Perhaps the intent is to let readers imagine themselves with the machines, in their own ideal environments.

It's easy to get caught up in the book's single-minded focus on the magnificent machines. That, by choice, omits the many athletic and cultural aspects of bicycles, and the dedication of the inventors who push out the boundaries of what a bike can be and do. Simple homage to the machine itself is enough, though, and this does the job beautifully.
