The Three Fockers
on 5 January 2012
The Fockers has developed into a successful franchise with the three films to date performing well at the box office. The main driving factor is the rather uncomfortable relationship between Frank Byrnes, (Robert de Niro), father of Pam and Pam's boyfriend and later husband, Gaylord Focker (Ben Stiller) who prefers to call himself Greg for understandable reasons. From the first film Greg is caught up in awe of Frank and feels the need to impress him and this makes for some hilarious interaction between the two. Frank's 'circle of trust', which Greg seems to regularly find himself outside of is a significant element in the relationship.
Apart from Frank and Gaylord, the most impressive participants are Greg's eccentric parents played by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. Sadly their participation was greatly reduced by the third film, Little Fockers, and they were reduced almost to cameo performances. Overall these three films make for very funny entertainment, though of the three, the third is probably the weakest. They are probably not the sort of film which warrants a repeat viewing too often, but certainly are worth an occasional revisit. As this has developed into something of a franchise, I would not be surprised to see a fourth offering in due course.
