I do collect classic films. Now I am approaching 66 years of age so this film was made when I was born. I watched it years back and loved it when the indians came down into the river to help tow the keel boat up river. Call me sentimental if you like, this film is a REAL classic. I would not call it a western though. It shows the men in those pioneering first days in 1800. The scenery is good but KD plays his part well. He was 35 years old when he played this part. Arthur Hunnicut is really the one who steals the show all the way through this rugged classic with his excellent narrating. Elizabeth Threatt plays the indian girl. It is in black and white and so it should be. I have clicked on the 5 stars but I would actually give it 10 out of 10. If you like rugged country type of films, you will love this one. If you also like classic films, you will love this one. It is old but well worth watching again and again. My copy arrived a day early. This is a brilliant film and I would say it is a collectors item. I love this film and I hope you do to. PC 23. 04. 2018.

Saw this in 1952 in Finland (twice!). Marvellously scripted and cast. Believable, honest and compelling. The missing fifth star is for the second-rate back-lot shots which detract from an otherwise perfect adventure film.
Whenever he's on the screen or voice-over, Hunnicut takes over (as he always does, in every film!)
Dewey Martin was cast, I believe, because he was shorter than Kirk -- he does a workmanlike job. Douglas is wonderful, as co-incidentally is Buddy Baer; you can sense the fun the cast had when making the movie..
Heartily recommended for the entire family

An enjoyable, old-fashioned movie is spoiled by a very poor picture quality. It's hardly worth your time. During this era of high definition, are we going to be subjected to a slew of cheap DVDs that haven't been remastered to extract the last few pennies from DVDs before they're consigned to the bin in favour of blu ray discs and downloads?

Odeon should be ashamed of themselves for having their name attached to such a poorly produced item.

I had for a long time been trying to get this film for my collection. Along with 'Lonely are the brave', it is one of the very best early Westerns with a young Kirk Douglas in the lead. A great film.

As of 2017, the 127 minute theatrical cut of The Big Sky has only been released officially on DVD in the UK (Odeon), Germany (Kinowelt) and France (Editions Montparnasse and Warner Bros). The French EM disc is also available as a limited "Édition Collector", with a second disc featuring the 141 minute pre-release cut. Just beware various poor quality Italian and Spanish bootleg DVDs, all of which contain the theatrical cut, despite some claiming to have the pre-release cut. Enjoy!

This movie was first released in 1952(2011) in B/W, fullscreen and runs 122 minutes. The sound is ok but the picture quality is poor. The extras are scene selection and photo gallery. The film starts(Grand Telon National Park) with the first men who took a keelboat up the wild Missouri River, through hostile Indian country, to the hills of Montana, to open the Great Wild West, in 1832. Jim Deakins(KIRK DOUGLAS) is taking his wagon into the wilds and notices something in the woods. He gets off, takes his rifle and follows the sound, but falls near a snake. The snake is killed with a knife by Boone Caudill(DEWEY MARTIN). Jim thanks Boone, but is hit by Boone as he doesn't like being followed. Jim offers Boone lift in his wagon and they become friends. Boone was running away from a sheriff. Jim sells his wagon and they ride to St Louis on Missouri River. As the arrive at the town at night, it was very busy with all sorts of people. They sell their mules and ask for Zeb Galloway(ARTHUR HUNNICUTT), who is Boone's uncle. After fight in the saloon, they are thrown into the jail. They find uncle Zeb in that jail. They figure that Missouri Fir Company were not keen on fir competition and wants opposition elliminated. After their fine is paid by Frenchy, they leave at night, in the fog, and join other men on the boat, which quietly sails away. At night, they all hear a woman scream and at day break, they all see this Indian woman. The Captain Frenchy tells the men that they were going to the Black Feet Indian Country for firs. Zeb tells them that the girl was daughter of the Indian Chief Red Horse and nothing should happen to her, and Zeb was taking her back to her people. At night fire is started on the boat and Teal Eye(ELIZABETH THREATT) is missing. Later, while in the river, their boat is surrounded by war painted 'Crow' Indians.
This story of A B GUTHRIE Jr was probably well photographed by RUSSELL HARLAN and is slowly directed by HOWARD HAWKS. Their is good background music by DIMITRI TIOMKIN. Arthur Hunnicutt again gives a masterly performance, for which he was nominated for Oscar in a supporting role. The action scenes are good.
ARTHUR LEE HUNNICUTT was born on 17.2.1910 in Gravelly, Arkansas. He attended Arkansas State Teachers College, but dropped out when he ran out of money. He joined the theatre company and moved to New York and in Broadway Productions. He developed a country character and found himself always as a character in movies much older than himself. He did many films in 1940's and in 1949, moved to Hollywood. He mainly did supporting roles, characters ,sympathetic and rural type. He earned an oscar nomination for supporting actor in 'The Big Sky'(1952). He did nearly 40 guest appearances in TV programmes like, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman and Perry Mason. He was married to PAULINE LILE and had no children. He also served as Honorary Mayor of Northridge, California. He died on 26.9.1979, aged 69, of tongue cancer, in Woodland Hills, California.
Some of Arthur Lee Hunnicutt's films are:-
    (1) Silver Queen, 1942
    (2) Stars in My Crown, 1950
    (3) Broken Arrow, 1950
