I love Big Finish products but the company name is not a brand name like Yves Saint Laurent, so to emblazon it across the cover is the first mistake. The second is in not acknowledging the success that Doctor Who has brought Big Finish, and the third is, for a massive hard cover book, is the total cheap black and white feel for a comparatively large print run book from a company that exit so many quality products every month. Arguably a fourth is the cover; the three dimensional globe fixture holding a two dimensional disc is very clever, the monotone pictures of Big Finish participants is truly awful. If this was their first book or it was still 2004 I would be much more sympathetic; they have however produced some very decent hardback fiction with superb covers.

Why on earth could we not have a continuation of the more appropriate Doctor Who: The New Audio Adventures - The Inside Story range? It may have been black and white text and pictures, but then it was a long time ago and was a Doctor Who titled book with an appropriate Doctor Who cover.

I have bought over 440 Big Finish products but not this one, even when nearly half price. One cursory glance in the shop tells me that large format black and white informative texts are not harmonious with the mostly excellent audio packages that Big Finish produce. Ironically the A5 full colour free magazine, Vortex, shows more dynamism and vibrancy. This book either needed to be a paperback, perhaps more Doctor Who related, and the black and white-ness would have been totally acceptable, or the current large format hardback needed to be full or part colour, and for me personally, more of a Doctor Who product.

Unfortunately, I can only echo the comments of the other reviewers. As a Big Finish subscriber I was very much looking forward to this as something that would replace the previous Audio Adventures hardback, bring the story up to date, and point the way to the future. The book was heavily hyped on the Big Finish website and others, but it is, sadly, a crushing disappointment. The paper is desperately cheap, and the content solely black and white. The photographs are poorly reproduced, and the whole things seems very under designed. As the first reviewer said, Big Finish's free newletter Vortex has ten times the production values of this book. For the price, I would have expected something glossy, with a selection of colour photos at the very least. I would also have preferred more emphasis on the Doctor Who audios and spin offs, and a more indepth treatment overall. The page count is bulked out by having a huge type face. The book needs smaller print, more detail, higher quality paper, and colour to justify the price.

I received this as a Christmas present, for which I'm grateful, but I won't be buying volume 2, if it ever appears. This is not a fitting tribute to the excellence of Big Finish's productions, or the hard work done by their actors, writers and directors every month. Big Finish need to have a long, hard think about their production and design values if they contemplate more. As others have said, this would buy two Big Finish audios at full price, or half a dozen in one of their sales. Save your money for those, and get a much better idea of what makes Big Finish great.

This was hyped so much and showed lots of promise, but my initial happiness is evaporating. As I've had time to digest this, the more and more obvious and plain daft errors become apparent. When many a fan can immediately spot an error and know the correction off the top of their head, you know something's not quite right.

And the more I look at it, there is a lot of empty space. It's almost as if the final manuscript came in and they had to pad out the page count to justify the initial pricing that went up way back before this was finished. I also don't like the paper and printing used. It's very cheap looking and to the touch and as the photos were one of the main selling points, to see them reproduced so poorly is a massive let down.

I really don't wish to offend anyone involved with this book. But I can't really put a sugar coating on it either. If this was £10 to £15 cheaper and in paperback, I'm sure I could be much more supportive. As it is though, it's priced as a luxury item but with cheap printing, questionable layout and countless errors and missed opportunities.

This hefty tome, looks back over the early Big Finish audios. Not just their Doctor Who range (Sapphire and Steel, Highlander, Sarah Jane Smith etc) From tiny acorns, mighty oaks do indeed grow.
I specifically enjoyed reading the plot synopsis, a lovely reminder of great stories. The behind the scenes section isn't exhaustive but there are some real gems of information there.
I would have preferred the book to be glossy and in colour. Also, larger colour plates of the cd covers would have made this perfect.
A great informative read and a superb intro to the world of Big Finish!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Fans of the Big Finish Audio Adventures of Doctor Who 1 Jan. 2012
By Phillip Serna - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Having been a long term fan of the Big Finish Doctor Who range of adventures for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors as well as the spinoff ranges, the Big Finish Companion Volume 1 is the sort of non-fiction Doctor Who book I had been wanting for a long time. I am one who is deeply interested in the behind-the-scenes information, trivia, and the people behind the audios. I have found that this is a tightly written and excellent sourcebook - a Doctor Who Programme Guide for the audio adventures. Really looking forward to the second volume, but I must say that Richard Dinnick has done an excellent job with this book and is a perfect sourcebook for the dedicated reader or the casual browser alike.

Bravo to Big Finish for the work they do, and here's to many more years, and volumes of the Big Finish Companion for those of us who follow, with great anticipation, future releases by Big Finish. A must buy, and a perfect companion to Benjamin Cook's Doctor Who: The New Audio Adventures: The Inside Story. I cannot recommend these books enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Doctor Who fans! 6 April 2015

I have been a fan of Big Finish's Doctor Who range for years. But they've done a lot more than just Who. This guidebook delves into the history of the company, their many ranges, and gives detailed information about every single release, up through its publication. There is a volume 2 that continues where this left off.

This book goes in depth with the writers, directors, actors, and producers behind the BF stories, including lots of trivia I had never heard before. I cannot recommend this enough for Doctor Who and Big Finish fans.
