Product Description

Product Description

Now that the honeymoon is over, the real fun begins! Relive all the humor, hi-jinks, and heartwarming hilarity when the record-breaking romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding the highest-grossing independent film of all time!) comes to the small screen as the hilarious series My Big Fat Greek Life. The smash movie’s Oscar-nominated creator and SCTV alum Nia Vardalos (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen – My Big Fat Greek Wedding, 2002) reprises her star-making role as a contemporary woman trying to juggle her conservative family’s Old-World values with her own New-World dreams. Comic sparks fly as two cultures clash when they’re too close for comfort! On DVD for the first time, all seven uproarious episodes are included. Loaded with laughs, life lessons, and love in equal measure, My Big Fat Greek Life proves home is where the humor is — and "family" is a universal language we can all understand. It takes you where the movie left off!

From Amazon.co.uk

Although My Big Fat Greek Life doesn't capture the same relaxed, storytelling rhythm of the phenomenally successful My Big Fat Greek Wedding, almost the entire acting ensemble from the movie returned for this small-screen spin-off (only John Corbett, due to other obligations, was ably replaced by Steve Eckholdt as Nia's non-Greek husband), and their skilled interplay makes for a satisfying show. So it's a shame that the sitcom was cancelled after half a season. Like the movie, most of the episodes are concerned with family issues, playing with the contrasting tugs of family obligation and the desire for independence, all anchored by writer-star Nia Vardalos's smart, engaging presence. --Bret Fetzer

I was a bit sceptical about this series as I had heard it wasn't great, but I have to say I was pleasantly suprised. Sure, it's not the same as the movie (it was never going to be) but it is still very funny. I am a 'non-Greek' married to a Greek man and we live in Athens. Like the movie, the series manages to poke fun at Greek familiy life (and it's scarily accurate sometimes!) and some of the cultural and personality traits that are so prevalent here, whilst still managing to portray the warmth and humour that makes the culture so special.
If you liked the movie and if you have any connection or exposure to Greek culture, I am sure you will find this warm-hearted, humour entertainment.

This is a sitcom/TV series continuation of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I think it is very funny although the husband in the sitcom is played by a different actor. Nia's father is the comic relief of the ensemble and the problems highlighted here can be found in other cultures other than Greek. That made it easy to relate to and appreciate that there are certain traits that are universal amongst different human communities and cultures. A lot of life lessons were well depicted. Alas it lasted only the one season, seven episodes of fun and hilarity with real family warmth and humour. If you enjoyed the movie, you will love this, as it continues after the wedding and honeymoon.
The DVD has no special features, it is subtitled in English and German.

This sitcom is the follow up to the hit film 'my big fat greek wedding'. The writing on the sitcom was held back by a very low budget set, failure to follow on from the film, cast changes and poor direction.

It really could have been a rival to Ugly Betty if only it had stuck more closely to the film and held onto more characters.

Having said that, those who remained were acting to the hilt and are all known in the USA for their outstanding performances.

Worth a watch if you wanted to see what happened next from the film.

It is hard to take the concept and turn it into a sitcom, as that is totally alien to us Greeks. All the canned laughter trying to persuade you it's funny... Nope! The characters have changed names which threw me off a bit. The personalities were mixed up. Wasn't sure if they were Jewish (mother's looks and style) or Italian (echoes of Everybody Loves Raymond). Episodes got better as they progressed. Then they stopped. Pity. It could have been a hit series had it more sparkle and identity. The scenery suffered, too. Looked cheap. Unimaginative. But it is still enjoyable to watch. And if it ever had a rework, it could become a hit. Loved the husband, aunt and female cousin.

After seing and loving My Greek big fat wedding lots of times, we thought that "My big fat greek life" was in the same level, but nothing to compare.
The quality of some actors are good, but missing "something" comparing to the "wedding"...

Its base on the film, names have changed and the american satire comedy and canned laughter are rife in this series. That said i am cool with it being in my collection, a dvd thats good for when your having a duvet day!!!
