We meet Rosie in New York with her whole career ahead of her, and a new man who has just walked into the hotel where she works, and her life. We then jump forwards to find Rosie back home in Scarborough, managing a faded hotel in the Victorian seaside resort of Scarborough. The hotel is bought by a brash and somewhat trashy chain of resort hotels and the transformation of the hotel brings her into contact with the American brothers who have bought it and the consultant they bring in to oversee all of the changes.
As I have found with both of Lilly Bartlett's previous novels, set in Carlton Square (this book is a stand alone and unconnected with those), the story is so much more than that of just Rosie. The permanent residents of the hotel offer a warm support network for Rosie but can also exasperate her too. They are eccentric and lovable and the whole story kept me turning the pages quickly.
Rosie's story is wonderfully written, she's exactly the sort of person you'd like to be friends with. As usual in the Lilly Bartlett novels, there aren't any big, dramatic twists and turns in the book, it's just a really good yarn with characters you really enjoy. I can't wait for the next Lilly Bartlett.
This is my 1st read by Michelle and not the last i can tell you. the hotel has a mixture of guests from all backgraounds all of which are full of character and very quirky. Set in Scarborugh coast in England, sometimes it mentions Nyc. she is having to re apply for her job because of the new American owners who have bought the hotel.....her live takes a change when she meets chuck, who wants to organise an event at her hotel.....
A cute read if you need charcters full of wit and charm.
I am very glad it ended the way it did, but most of all I love what we found out that Rosie did to Chuck at the end - brilliantly thought out and something I would love to have done.
I can definitely recommend this book.
But she gets so attached, that when new owners take over and want to rip the heart and soul out of the old place, her fighting spirit kicks in. And her wounded heart beats back into life when the new owners send in a new employee to help.
