While many were a little put off by the length and random nature of Crazy Clown Time these were the things I loved most about it. The second Lynch album is leaner, tighter, shorter and more focused and individual Songs are more 'complete' as pieces of music but not quite the trip I hoped for. That said, the persistence of certain sound/sonic elements thoughout Lynch musical output means I can enjoy both albums as one very long album and while the whole shebang isn't to everyone's taste , Lynch fans, in the absence of new films (due to extended hiatus) can indulge in a little audio holiday with the master of mood,, mystery, and melancholic mirth. Get Crazy Clown Time and The Big Dream, dive in.

While it's an enjoyable album for it's polished production and slightly quirky style, fact is after around the fourth track David Lynch's voice sorely begins to grate and his choice to base the music around blues-style riffs means that - despite his own competent playing - the music begins to sound samey, the tracks bleeding together. The truth is - as was the same for Crazy Clown Time - Lynch is a competent if unspectacular composer, but desperately needs vocalists to liven up his tracks and his album as a whole.

Outstanding but unusual album and I love it, the vinyl pressing is very good and the sound quality on both vinyl and CD is truly excellent. Has become a firm favourite within my eclectic music collection.

I loved Crazy Clown Time and gave it 5 stars, but after repeated listening to this album it just ain't hittin' the spot. It feels like the cast offs from the Crazy Clown Time sessions. Saying that though, Michael Stipe of REM would have given his right arm to have written the beautiful 'Are you sure'. 'Sun can't be seen no more' is a v.catchy tune too with his son Riley on guitar.

I wish Mr Lynch success and prosperity in old age. Enjoy the royalty from my CD sales purchase...by going out and buying some of that foreign beer!

I loved Crazy Clown Time, it was brash, inventive, intensely theatrical and full of humour both dark and light.

The Big Dream is a worthy companion, even slightly surpassing it's predecessor in some ways, but certainly adding to the Lynch Lexicon.

Don't try and pick out individual tracks, this is not an album of "singles" this is a long running slow burning musical montage, except the Ballad of Hollis Brown, which is kooky when you think of where it came from and feels a little out of place here.

Lynch continues with his music where he left off with his films and is moving forward in his art. He seems to be breaking down experiences, events, people, places and then reassembling them in his own lop sided style.

If you imagine leaning back on a chair until you are just about to tumble backwards into the void, nervous of where you may be going but extremely confident of where you are, that is where I think Mr. Lynch is now. It feels like a very similar place to where Bowie was in 1977 and Scott Walker was in 2006 before The Drift cemented him in some form of artistic journey (what? I wouldn't know).

Where Bowie and Walker though have an edgy, nervy thematic and emotional violence to them, Lynch has a calm and charismatic descent in mind, a slow motion fall that could last a life time.

Just lean back on the chair, let the music flow over you and trust that Mr. Lynch is in control and knows what he is doing. It's a very fine ride indeed.

PS - Buy the double album (there's a nice surprise in their too), it is a richly textured mix and has peaked and troughs that are flattened out by MP3 and CD. Mr. Lynch is definitely a connoisseur of the vinyl arts.
