"A lift-the-flap board book of opposites is not an obvious vehicle for wit, but Big Dog, Little Dog not only makes funny animals out of stylish collage but uses flaps ingeniously to create unexpected transformations and jokes [...]" * Sunday Times * "They're vibrant, modern and engaging ways to teach about opposites and colours. Big Dog, Little Dog (opposites) dishes up all manner of fat versus thin or straight versus curly dogs in funny ways. And Surprising Birds(colours) is its perfect pair, stylishly revealing just the flash of a red wing or the sneaky peek of an orange beak." * My Book Corner * "[...] such colourful illustrations!" * Lily's Little Learners * Featured in The Week's best books for young readers. * The Week * "Beautifully simple and visually engaging, these books not only help to teach about first concepts but will also delight little ones as they observe changes through the clever design." * Acorn Books Blog *

I really like this book, it's so simple and yet so fun. Each double page has a dog or two pictured along with a word such as 'short', 'above' or 'awake'. The picture of the dog reflects the word on the page and then kids can pull or turn a flap in order to see the image changed. The changed image shows the opposite picture along with its opposite word, for example, an awake dog looks asleep when the flap is turned. There are lots and lots of opposites for kids to learn and some very funny pictures to look at.
I really love the illustrations in this book, they are what makes this book so fun. Each picture of a dog is so simple, there are no outlines to the illustrations but each one is made out of block shapes that just make this feel so appealing to me. I love the expression on some of the dogs and one particular flap made me laugh when a long straight dog turns into something else. The simple design of this book along with the bright and bold colours make it easy for kids to enjoy this book and I think plenty of children will love looking at this for the fun pictures and learn without even realising it.
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve very young kids vocabulary with these new words. As well as learning they'll also enjoy the fun of lifting flaps and the funny illustrations of all these dogs.

Each of the dogs are designed so well, with funny expressions, big fat bodies and fun patterns all over them (obviously don't expect a realistic depiction of a dog breed - this is just for fun!). The element of humour the author has injected into this board book is the key to it's success - for such little readers, a cute and funny dog is more engaging than a deliberately serious, educational book and it is now a firm favourite!
The only negative for me is the lack of story. I wouldn't ever expect an elaborate story from a book of this nature, but something to tie the dogs together would have been helpful to give the book a bit of a longer shelf life in our house - there's only so many times you can enjoy the same flaps and extendable pullies.
If you are considering which lift-the-flaps books to get, it's counterpart, surrounding "Surprising Birds" is similar in nature but definitely isn't as exciting - I would easily recommend this book as the front runner.
ARC provided free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
On each double page there is one or more dogs with a flap to lift that teaches the child a opposites, such as long/short, above/below etc
I feel that the book in terms of context and for educational purposes for a very young child is lovely. However I do feel that the flaps are not really suitable for a small child as they could be easily torn. Some are quite delicate and one was hard to open = it went over the double page.
Overall, this is a fun, colourful book that is useful for helping children learn their opposites.
*I received a free copy of this book, which I voluntarily reviewed
The lumpy abstract dogs that help illustrate these concepts are sweet and there's clever use of the flaps and paper cutting to explore opposites and positioning especially on the spotty/plain, front/back pages, this isn't your usual 'what's hiding beneath' kind of lift the flap book, the flaps themselves form an integral and kinaesthetic part of comprehending the differences which is great for young learners to explore these ideas in a playful, active and visual way.
This is probably our favourite opposites and positions book we've come across as many we looked at for our older daughter were a bit boring or had little 'drama' to help concrete the differences, this is both fun and educational and importantly the fun itself is part of the learning and comprehension process which increases its value in the developing mind. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Walker Books for the opportunity to interact with an advanced copy.
