Malkie, the hapless protagonist, owns a small company that develops video games, and when we meet him he is having an existential crisis. Or perhaps he just drinks too much. Malkie regularly drinks himself into a stupor and suffers – along with the usual hellish hangovers – alarming, possibly dangerous, short-term memory loss.
His best friend/colleague/sidekick Ian is a techno whizz kid who saves the fortunes of the company after a freak electrical storm had threatened to wipe out the computer mainframe, and Malkie is pathetically grateful. But a strange incident at Ian’s block of flats one night, gets Malkie wondering … is Ian much more dangerous than he appears? We might equally ask: is Malkie?
The story moves along at a gentle pace until two violent and seemingly unconnected events send it rocketing into another much darker and malevolent direction.
There’s a lot to enjoy in The Big Crunch, some compelling sequences and spot-on comic observations, but ultimately – for this reader at least – the novel doesn’t totally hang together. The character Malkie is too passive to really hold my interest and it is hard to feel empathy for any of the characters. But it did make me laugh out loud at times.
