The story and art complement each other and are very funny. The book itself is very thick and a bargain for $ 12.

BUY THIS BOOK! If you are a comics or graphic novel fan, your collection is not complete without Barry Ween, Boy Genius!
I first encountered Judd Winick when I found Frumpy the Clown. I have enjoyed his work ever since. Frumpy had splashes of liberalism, but not so much that it detracted from the heartfelt connections of the characters or the overall well paced humor, but enough to be present. Read it!! Seriously!
Any-who, In this series, Barry Ween (a boy genius with a mind that can and does alter, not only the universe he lives in, but several other parallel worlds) is a success for me because he presents his biases or reasoning as fact; and since he is a genius living among the rabble of humanity his understanding of the human race typically falls on deaf ears. This causes some hilarious and cynical asides that come off as muddled and nonsensical ramblings to the other characters, and crisp, poignant analysis of the growth of humans to the reader. Moreover, a lot of the humor is juvenile which lines up Barry for hilarious, curse-riddled responses of pure exasperation. The dialogue is pretty damn close to reality as well. The characters seem as though they were written by intelligent young kids, which is part of what makes this so endearing. My friends and I spoke with the same amount of curse words as Barry and his "peers" if not more. This book is pretty cheap and a fast paced read that will make you laugh and still has time to show you Barry's weaknesses, and set up some very touching moments, not to mention some pretty awesome fight scenes, as well as fun and cartoonish artwork.
Not recommended for young readers...at all, and as it was not designed for them in the first place this shouldn't be an issue.
If you are looking for intellectual reading for kids, any Calvin and Hobbes collection will do. But, if you are looking for a gift for your cynical high schooler, or college student who has already read Calvin and Hobbes (if they haven't you are a bad parent), Barry Ween is a perfect avenue for them to divert some of their precious angst.
