New town, new school, old problems...
After her parents' divorce, city girl Lori Palmer has been dragged across the country to start a new life without her dad.

But, after a chance connection, Lori finds herself hanging out with Jake, the most popular (and hottest) guy at school. And, Lori is suddenly thrust into his unfamiliar and exhilarating world of water polo, parties and stargazing.
As Lori's old anxieties begin to resurface, she has to find a new artistic release. And, unknowingly ignites a powerful movement.
One that causes BIG problems.

Soon, Lori has to decide if she can finally stand up for what she believes in.

A lovely book, thoroughly recommended.
Big Boned tells the story of Lori, the titular 'big boned' teenager who's just moved from her specialist art school in Johannesburg to the pristine seaside town of Clifton in Cape Town. Immediately she feels out of her depth, conspicuous in her own skin as apparent perfection surrounds her everywhere. I would caution that the first few chapters are a little heavy going. Lori really doesn't have a great opinion of herself at the start of the book, but as we learn more about her, many of these reasons become apparent.
What I particularly loved about this story was Lori's acceptance of herself over the course of the book. Rather than changing herself, Lori learns to love the unique things about herself, embracing those differences. The growing romance is Jo Watson's speciality, and doesn't feel at all forced. I also loved the interactions between Lori and her younger brother, who is on the spectrum. Those scenes felt particularly authentic, and I particularly liked the way Lori focused a lot of time encouraging her brother's positive autistic traits.
Watson has this ability to effortlessly intertwine romance, humour, and a social critique of modern South Africa. She tackles weighty issues ranging from racial discrimination to gender-based violence with sensitivity. Layered among these important themes is a focus on body positivity and self-acceptance.
Ultimately, this is a positive story of self-acceptance, beautifully told. Highly Recommended.

Many will find this an excellent read, they with Lori all the way. They will share her Assembly from Hell and innumerable embarrassments. Fortunately there is also much to uplift with characterization so strong. Particularly moving is her relationship with Zac, he so upset when all is not quite right but a mass of facts and figures and inventiveness. What a bonus he should make a friend of little Lisa, sister of Jake, idolised sporting hero at Lori's school! Surely possible developments....
Add Dr. Stride, literally a colourful therapist who uses plants as a perfect way of helping patients learn about themselves. Then there is Thembi, she with aspirations that would truly shock her parents.
So much to enjoy! Lori is not the only one enhanced by true self-discovery (a delightful love theme greatly helping). Many will delight at how her artistic skills suddenly enter a new dimension - overnights art with a purpose attracting much publicity.
Size? She learns not to obsess about it (no need to either if that cover image is anything to go by). By implication, other readers should neither, simply make the most of the skills they possess.
Life-affirming fare, hopefully destined for the success it deserves.
