This is worth it for the soundtrack alone which is incredibly funky and improvisational. The plot is bewildering and there is some staggeringly non p.c dialogue but that's half the fun. The head Wardens performance is beyond even ironically bad yet the film is hugely entertaining. It's certainly not a sex film per se and what nudity or sex does take place is mainly suggested rather than shown. Pam Grier is stunning as Blossom and some of the supporting cast give it a real effort.. Some of the editing is baffling and there's plenty of cheesy humor and laughable special effects but the sheer verve of the film makes it highly watchable.

The Big Bird Cage was amongst a slew of low budget "women in prison|" genre movies Roger Corman financed and filmed in the Philippines in the early 70's. A pre blaxpoltation Pam Grier starred in most of the movies Corman made in the Philippines which were all filmed back to back. After her star turn in previous flick "Women in cages" Grier is promoted to lead actress and is ably assisted by the brilliant Sid Haig, who would go onto star alongside Grier in many of her blaxplotation movies she made just after this.

The plot is pretty simple. Pam Grier and Sid Haig lead a band of filipino revolutionaries and decided to add to their numbers by liberating a womens prison camp run by a sadistic warden and his 2 gay officers! Grier is sent in to infiltrate the camp before the attack alongside Haig who soon get into all sorts of shenanegans until chaos ensues!

As typical with the "Women in prison" movie genre you get the usual torture and sex scenes, untypically there are no lesbian guards in this which is usually a staple of the genre!, instead the 2 male guards are camper and gayer than Larry Grayson and are of course impervious to the womens charms! One particular scene in which a guard is overcome by the female prisoners who start to rape him is particularly hilarious!

If you like low budget explotation movies then you'll likely love this! The acting is largelly horrendous (even Grier was still learning her trade at this point in her career) and the script pathetic but for most that's the appeal of these movies. If nothing else it's worth watching just for the great double act of Pam Grier and Sid Haig!

The DVD Picture quality is surprisingly good but the mono sound could have been given at least a stereo remix. The framing is 4.3 pan and scan which is another disappointment but at such a cheap price it's not that important i guess.
