Construction is almost entirely of plastic so it remains to be seen how robust it will prove to be before the plastic starts to degrade and split etc. At least it is very easy to clean the trays (they have a solid base - no mesh which would be difficult to clean).
We have dried cherries and plums so far. You have to dry the fruit thoroughly or it starts to go mouldy. We have found that it's best to soak the dried fruit in hot water before consumption.
One particular bad mark is that is comes with a moulded two-pin plug! So you have to use an adapter or cut the plug off and fit a standard three-pin UK plug. Apart from that and the question over its longevity, I reckon it's good value and effective.
Brief update:- Two years on, this is still working really well. No sign of deterioration of the plastic trays. Huge crop of dried cherries this year!
The design is fairly simple and the cord emerges from the handle so it's not elegant. It's basically an upside down hair dryer that blows hot air radially over a stack of plastic trays. The air escapes from gaps between the trays.
The construction feels solid. The trays are substantial and flex slightly and feel as though they will last well without brittling.
I received a plug adaptor so could use it immediately.
To start with the timer was tight and tended to stick but I assumed this would ease with use and this has happened.
I bought this item to help me deal with a glut of apricots and so far I have dried about 12 kilos and am very satisfied. It takes a while to learn how best to use it and you have to keep an eye on the progress and alter things as required. The drying is slightly zonal, being warmest in the centre of the middle trays, so it helps to shuffle the trays and move the fruit about but this is not a problem. I have found that it is best to turn the heat down towards the end.
The manual claims you can dry a large range of berries and vegetables but I doubt whether most people would want to. I think I will only use it for stone fruit, apples, pears and tomatoes and be satisfied with that.
The Instruction Manual is detailed and has a lot of information on how to prepare the fruits before starting the dehydration process. They also give you an estimate of the amount of time it takes to get if completely done. I found however that this takes a bit of experimenting. My apples have different -behaviours- depending on the variety and maturing state.
It is very simple to use, just turn the dials for power (1,2 or 3 - most powerful) like a hair dryer, and set the time.
My favorite so far is the apple slices with cinnamon on top. My kids love it and can't keep enough stock...
My in-laws and a neighbor saw the results and asked me to order a couple more, they should be here next Monday.
It is a great piece of equipment and I recommend this to everyone that likes to know what they eat (I only use fruit that I grow on my backyard), I am already piling up strawberries, onions and pears for the winter.
I highly recommend this product.
