The book describes a widely-known bidding method known as the Law of Total Tricks. In 2008 I wrote a review, giving it 5 stars. But, having used it for a while, and with the passage of time, I've learnt better.

The method is deceptively attractive, in that it appears to be an easy way of automating one's bidding - removing the need for judgement. It has been very popular. Unfortunately it is a bit like the talkative gambler or fisherman - entertaining and impressive when it pays off, but quickly forgotten when it doesn't.

I've now read a book by Mike Lawrence, his full critique of the Law of Total Tricks ("I Fought the Law of Total Tricks"). With the help of computers to evaluate thousands of hands the book provides convincing evidence that two of the law's most basic principles are incorrect. It also demonstrates that, on many types of hand, that the law is correct on less than 50% of occasions.

I suggest you familiarise yourself with Lawrence's work (Google it) before parting with money on this one.

I bought this book soon after it was first published. It has made a HUGE difference to my game.

It doesn't really discuss "systems" nor does it even touch upon card play.

The focus of the book is upon the competitive auction and those dilemmas which occur in about three quarters of all of them:
"Should I Pass?"
"Should I bid 'one more'?"
"Should I sacrifice?"
"Should I Double?".

You might feel that you have good judgement or intuition. Perhaps you have. But if there is something which could assist you to make better decisions, then why not avail yourself of it?

For myself, my tournament average has increased about 5% since I've read it.
(Of course your partner must read it too!)

It doesn't always work - but the author is at pains to tell you this. However you need to get these decisions right most of the time.I see no reason why your game won't improve by huge leaps if you apply the principles set out in the book.

Are you having difficulties in competitive auctions? Do you find yourself overbidding and going down or underbidding and noticing that it would be better if you overbid? Then read this book. It give an accurate rule on when to compete if the number of trumps in 4hands are accurate. Although there are many flaws of the law, it is still nice to know the idea behind it. The writes explains the ideas in a clear and conceise manner with some conventions to incorporate the law into your bidding.

I am still struggling with this game after a year............. this book takes a different approach to bidding, which is useful for beginners/intermediates, just working through the basics, there are lots of examples which clarify some bids, I find this very useful, just wish more of it would rub off!
