The photographs are stunning, though less so than the comparable ones from Russia: A World Apart. However, that book lacks first hand accounts of 'revolutionaries on the carpet'. The anecdotes about what actually happened when the Red Army and/or German Communists took a Schloss chill to the bone, and, hard to obtain in English, the book is worth buying for those alone. The book demonstrates how, had Russia achieved a conventional vIctory in a WW111, all would have been lost. Western Civilisation would have been over. This is no place to dwell on a historically-challenged Government taking this country to the sidelines of history, nor on the terrible potential consequences of this grotesque act of folly. If you roll over on to your back on the floor, your stomach does not always get tickled. It might get savagely mauled, if not .....I am stopping here. Russia has still not recovered from her Revolution, and nor has Civil Society been fully restored from a line east of Moscow to as far west as The Elbe. The East Elbian, and The Polish, aristocracy still do not have their Estates back. This is a very good time for international outrage on this sad subject. I was anticipating a collection of photographs showing everyday life in the DDR. Very disappointed to find a collection of poorly lit statues. Not a human in sight. Complete waste of money.
