A Stellar Cast for a Genre Defining Game:
BEYOND: Two Souls will feature Oscar nominee Ellen Page in the lead role of Jodie Holmes, a young woman who possesses supernatural powers through her link to an invisible entity. Ellen is supported by Willem Dafoe who plays Nathan Dawkins, an enigmatic scientist working for a government division studying paranormal activities. Dawkins’ professional curiosity in Jodie, driven by personal tragedy, is a central theme in BEYOND: Two Souls, and provides a rich and evocative narrative that only Dafoe’s subtleties of performance could fully realise.
In BEYOND: Two Souls, gamers will play through fifteen years of Jodie’s story, experiencing the most striking moments of her life. As she traverses the globe, Jodie will face incredible challenges set against a backdrop of emotionally charged events, the likes of which have never before been seen in a video game.
Like its predecessor Heavy Rain, BEYOND: Two Souls will allow players to shape the course of the story through their decisions and actions taken in the game.

The graphics are outstanding and are amongst the best on the current gen consoles. The soundtrack is also superb, not quite as good as The Last of Us, but not far off.
My only criticisms of the game would be that the slow-motion action scenes weren't as good as the system used in Heavy Rain and I think it does take an hour or two to properly get into the storyline. The latter isn't helped by the fact that the game is not in chronological order, jumping between different time periods and at first I found this annoying. However, the more time you invest in it, the more it makes sense and the more hooked you become. Actually looking back, whilst confusing and irritating at first, this quickly becomes a great device for keeping the player wondering what will happen next and in some cases, wondering what it was that caused the consequence you are playing through.
One thing I would say is that the demo doesn't really do the game justice and I'd recommend those on the fence to at least rent the game and invest a decent amount of time in it before deciding if it is for them or not.
As for the game itself, though... If you've played Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) or Heavy Rain, you already know what you're getting into, so I probably wouldn't pay much attention to critic reviews. The game, like other Quantic Dream titles, is more interactive movie than it is an actual game and frankly, this is what I love about their games. Most typical games feel limited in what actions you can do apart from walking down designated paths or shooting so it's refreshing to have other interactions.
Although this can technically be described as an action game, there's not a lot of action in it. One of the biggest criticism of said action is that it doesn't really affect the game. One can miss all the action prompts and come out of an explosive scene alive and kicking, which is a negative - especially compared to Heavy Rain, where most actions have consequences. But the performances and the main story beats can help you forget this and if you're just a casual gamer, you'll probably prefer this.
My only real gripe with this game is the schizophrenic pacing of the game. It's told in completely random order, jumping through time when the protagonist might be an angsty teen, a child or a young woman - usually with no real effect. This is loosely explained towards the ending, but it doesn't justify this decision. This isn't Memento; the story isn't about memory lapses etc., so it feels tacked on to be edgy and frankly, I was confused by the story because of it. I believe there's an option to play it in chronological order after completing the game, so I'm very much looking forward to playing it that way so the story will make more sense.
Speaking of story, this spans around 15 years or so of the protagonist's life so it is, again, a little schizophrenic. Without spoiling anything (as most of it can be seen in trailers) we span years where she's homeless, in a warzone and even wandering the deserts. This could easily have been several different games as the tone shifts dramatically throughout the game, but I think this is actually what helps the game stay interesting.
A nice feature of the game is that it lets you use smart phone to control it. Whilst gamers probably won't give a crap (and rightly so, as it'll drain you phone's battery like nobody's business!) it does open up opportunities for family and friends who never play video games. I've had people visit who seemed intrigued by the game but aren't gamers by any stretch of the imagination but would consider playing it through their phones. I think we need more games like this to diversify not only genre but audience, which is a small predictable bunch compared to other mediums.
The special edition is okay. The packaging is nice, but I was disappointed all the extras were download=only. I'm still using the old 40gb PS3 and thanks to GTA's 8gb install and this game's 4gb install, I had to delete a lot of stuff just to be able to download them all. I was a little disappointed in the dynamic theme, mostly because the Heavy Rain one was pretty cool whereas with this game, it's just a slide show of the character through the ages.
The game is exciting, emotional and has pretty solid performances all around. This is probably the first time I've liked Ellen Page in anything and Willem DeFoe is his usual great self (though does have a few hammy predictable parts towards the end). I'd actually recommend this game to film fans rather than gamers for this reason as well as the strong narrative, which is rare in the bigger games. It's a fun game that starts slow, but engages you (and potentially others around you). If you're the type that keeps watching movies screaming at the screen "why would you do that?!" or "don't open that door!" despite knowing you can't really do anything about it, I think you'll like this game. I do.
