Their writing is magnificent and hooks you in from the very first paragraph. It plot flows smoothly and, despite this being set in an imaginary dystopian future, is realistic, gritty and fast paced. It was good to get to know Nessa, she turned out to be quite a different person to the one I was expecting, and Ryder/Michael is a smokin' hot hero. I love how the book is written from 1st person POV, as this allows you to totally get into/understand the hero and heroine. It's also nice that 'old' characters are also given a voice so that their stories are continued.
The rest of the books got 5 stars from me - this lost half a star as it didn't tear at my emotions as much as the other books did. I think this was partly because the entire book is set in a situation of stress and worry, so there wasn't the contrast of everything being wonderful followed by huge emotional upheaval.
I'm already waiting for the spin-off series and am just off to pre-order book 1 of Gideon's Riders.
Nessa has been a brilliant character and this story gives her depth and charisma. Ryder is the perfect man for her, strong and powerful. Their path is true to their characters and sweeps you along for the ride.
This is an amazing tale of how the war is fought and the effect it has on all the O'Kanes. Characters from the previous books get there conclusions too.
A brilliant price of writing and I can't wait for the next series to start. I have already ordered the Gideon's Riders 1st book.
I highly recommend this book and all in the series.
Like others, I ugly-cried over the fate of some of the characters and burned the midnight oil as I couldn't bear to put the book down without reaching the end.
Thank you Kit Rocha for the best book hangover I've had in years...O'Kane for life!

This book was also most memorable for the final battles of the Revolution that has been building since the series began, but I liked Nessa and Ryder's relationship more than I've enjoyed those featured in the last several books and novellas. Perhaps because of the upheaval of the Revolution, Nessa and Ryder's relationship is more emotional and romantic than others in the *Beyond* universe. They've also dialed back the kink, which I was glad about, not because there's anything wrong with BDSM, but because in a culture that values diversity as much as the people of Sector Four, it strains credulity that *everyone* would be turned on by the same things.
Telling the meat-and-guts story of the war alongside Nessa's romance was an inspired choice. Throughout the series she's been on the sidelines, vital to the O'Kane's survival as she produces the liquor that keeps their money coming in--but she's nearly useless at the skills of war, and her helplessness really sells just how bad things have gotten.
And Ryder? Hot damn, do I love a man that can laugh with his lover. Him teasing Nessa was almost too adorable to take. Personality-wise, they were a great match.
Taking a short break from their POV chapters during the final confrontation itself was also a good choice, letting the reader see the battle from multiple perspectives familiar from the earlier books, letting us see how those characters had changed and how they felt about what they were fighting for.
The only disappointment to me--and it's minor, not even dinging the review score a star--is that I went into this knowing that characters would die, but the important ones would be safe. Several "starring" characters--ie, ones that had their own romances--were injured, but the deaths were restricted to side characters. I mean, I get it. I would have thrown my Kindle across the room if Cruz had been killed...but that doesn't mean knowing we wouldn't lose anyone major did take some of the suspense away.
I read this last book in the Beyond series with a bit of sadness, and wishing good endings for all the characters I’ve read about with affection. Unfortunately, not everyone gets their HEA, and we feel the pain of the O’Kane family as they learn to live with that reality.
Above all, The Beyond Series is just a great story/saga! That’s what kept me coming back, hungry for more about the characters with each new book and novella. With all the darkness of the story's dystopian world, and all varieties of kink the characters use to express their freedoms, these are people who care about each other and sacrifice all that they have to keep their freedoms.
This last book shows us how the tensions with Eden are resolved. As you would expect from the other books in the series, the resolution is not neat and clean, but it does set the stage for new beginnings. We’re also treated to Ryder and Neesa’s story. Neesa has been a bit of a mystery up to now, and reading about how she came to Sector 4 helped to explain why the O’Kane’s have been so protective of her.
I’ve been hooked since the first book, because the story is that good. I’m looking forward to rereading the entire series again, from beginning to end. It Rocha makes that easier now by providing the entire series in a discounted set that I highly recommend. Before The End (Beyond Series Ultimate Glom Edition)
I look forward to reading the related Gideon series, happy to know that the great stories will continue!
Nessa has a complicated past but she also has been with the O'Kanes since before the very first book. We have known who Nessa was from the very beginning. Nessa and her magical whiskey. I liked finding out her story and why she does the whiskey and why she is who she is. Ryder's story was a bit more complicated but even his perfectly explained who he was. Put them together, they're so polar opposite in many ways, Nessa is a dreamer, Ryder doesn't know how to dream, but they're so similar in many other ways. The heat between the two of them could be felt with every scene they had together.
Word of advice, don't start with this book if you haven't read the rest of the series or you will not understand the O'Kane way of life or even who Nessa is. Plus the war will not make much sense without the backstory.
My only complain about the series wrapping up (minor spoiler here) is the whole everyone we got a love story for is fine, maybe a little rough around the edges after the war, but they all get to keep their happily ever after. That's not to say no one dies, I mean they go to war, but all the characters we know and love manage to make it out alive. It did not detract from Nessa and Ryder's love story though.
I've been wondering what twists and turns would come with Ryder at the helm and Kit did not disappoint. This was, in my opinion, one of the best books in the sector. I wasn't thrilled with the last book in the way I am with this one. Ryder stepped up and Dallas showed everyone how old school could devastate when properly executed.
The sector war that has been brewing since the beginning has finally come and passed and we see who was in the background helping and who was front and center. The losses that were sustained were heartbreaking. (get your tissues, this was heart wrenchingly so well written) But in the end, it all led the way to Sector 1 and I believe we will see a bit of healing of certain characters there. Also, the long-awaited arrival of Ace/Rachel/Cruz's baby was a wonderful surprise.
I loved the 6 months later chapter that tidied up everything that happened in the war and what was being built since the fall of Eden. I love that some in Eden came together to help the sectors in the final hour and stayed to help rebuild.
All in all, this was a great book that answered many questions I had and closed the book so to speak on Sector 4 leaving enough of a door open to revisit the characters should there be an opportunity while paving the way to Sector 1.
Warning: you will laugh and you will most definitely cry so get some tissues and go on over to S4 to finish up the war and move into S1.
I wish Beyond Surrender was longer! I wanted more time with Nessa who has always been on of my favorites. I wanted more time to savor her finding love and to learn more about the tasty Ryder. A man truly worthy of the O'Kane Princess.
I knew that we would be facing war with Eden and I figured thee would be losses but I cried and then when I thought we were going to lose one of my favorites-- well I had to put my Kindle down and take a walk. I am truly invested in these characters and for a reader as jaded as myself- that means something.
Thank you for giving us this book and I'll be O'Kane for Life.
I so badly want to jump in an tell everything to get it off my chest. But that would spoil it for you. And that I won't do. But I will say this book gave me some laughs, gave me some joy, stopped my heart in some spots and had me ugly crying. I am sad it's over and I have a bit of a book hangover. Guess reading reading all and every book in this series one after the other will do that to you. But it is the best book hangover ever.
Gives this hole series a chance. If you do buy the Before the End bundle. It has every thing on this series in it (except this book which is the last book) and it's way cheaper than buy them individually. These books are full of love, loyalty, brotherhood and kinky anything goes sex. O'Kanes for life.
Nessa & Ryder were so great together! FINALLY, we got to see her treated like the sexy woman I knew she was. She's always just been the cute, spunky, talented brew crafter, little sister to the O'Kanes but not this time around, thank gods. The way Ryder was with her thrilled me to bits; slow & sensual, showing her so much desire & need. Their scenes were HOT.
The action parts were my favorite scenes in the book though. Loved the rush they gave me; not knowing who'd come home safely, who they'd encounter in the battlefield, what Eden would do, what Ashwin & the other soldiers would do. They were a total nail-biters!
Loved the "Six Months Later" chapter at the end. Hearing the tiny happiness details for all of the characters made my heart smile. I only wish we would've gotten more of the "after war" part because I'm all about the HEA. Here's hoping that Kit Rocha continues on with those HEA novellas because the ending set them up brilliantly!
I'm super sad to see this series come to an end but am looking forward to the new Gideon's Riders books. C'mon March! I need me some more Ashwin & Kora!!
Nessa and Ryder are good together. They counter each other well. I did expect brotherly interrogations for Ryder that I didn't get. Also, I didn't expect tears, but I shed quite a few.
Nessa is at the heart of the O'Kane empire. Without her, there's no liquor. Ryder's life has been nothing but training for war. He's right in the middle of planning and bankrolling the one they're in. He doesn't know how to be anything but a soldier. She's helping him see past that. It's fun watching him learn compassion. She's always kept a little part of herself blocked from others. She's always wanted what the other O'Kane's have. With Rider, she finally lets someone in. He's showing her that she doesn't have to be alone anymore. But it is war. Ryder won't make her promises he can't keep. He won't promise he'll come back. She can't think like that.
To find out who comes home and who doesn't read this series. I have enjoyed it so much and look forward to Gideon's Riders.
Beyond Surrender finally let's us into the life of the liquor queen, Nessa. Since the beginning of the series, I have always wondered about Nessa, her life story. And just as expect, Kit Rocha does an amazing job of brining her character truly to life, the reader falls in love with her and her story.
This last book in the Beyond Series was a somewhat fast read for me because I just couldn't put it down. The war is coming to a head and as a reader you're just dying to know what happens. I laughed and I most definitely cried. Overall I believe this was the perfect ending for the O'Kane story, and even though I am sad it's over, I am definitely excited for the Gideon's Riders series!
Bigger than their matchup though, was the culmination of all the tension and preparing. War is here! Beyond Surrender is action packed, full of triumph and heartbreak. I laughed and cried out loud. My husband mocked me, but I didn't care! These were people I cared about!!!
It wrapped up more satisfyingly than many series manage, leaving just enough loose ends to allow us to visit again in Gideon's Riders!
I have read and listened to all of the "Beyond" books to date. Many of them more than once. I am a fan. An advance reader copy was generously provided for this particular book by the authors in exchange for an honest review.
One warning: Do NOT read this book if you haven’t read the rest. It is not your typical cliffhanger but you have to read the rest of the series.
