Get ready for intense sci-fi action adventure with Beyond Skyline, the stand-alone sequel to 2010 hit Skyline. Los Angeles Detective Mark Corley (Frank Grillo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) thought bailing out his eighteen-year-old son, Trent (Jonny Weston, Taken 3), was the worst part of his day. But on the ride home, the skies above fill with a strange blue light. Within moments, the entire city's population is vacuumed up into a massive alien ship including his son. In the aftermath, the resilient Mark and a few survivors encounter a highly skilled resistance force in South East Asia, led by the deadly Sua (Iko Uwais, The Raid 1 & 2). In a race against time, these warriors from different sides of the world must unite to save their families and take back the planet.

BEYOND SKYLINE stars Frank Grillo (so you know it will at least have some gritty acting on board) and while it kicks off with what looks like a rerun of the first film it soon becomes a different beast altogether after the group get transported onto the alien mothership and into what looks like a stinking nightmarish Hell. The film really escalated for me from here as I wasnt expecting the futuristic setting and even though this little movie (once again) didnt have the colossal budget Star Wars has right now it was a ton of fun (brains getting torn out fun actually haha). As the film progresses (I dont want to spoil anything but the setting changes a second time) the dude from The Raid movies turns up (Iko Uwais) along with another Raid character who played Mad Dog and theres some fight scenes near the end that are really kinda awesome. And when you consider the limp, scifi lite, "sequel" there was to Cloverfield (which had little but the last few seconds in relation to it) BEYOND SKYLINE at least gives us more of the good stuff and definitely ups the ante on the first film. Nope, its not a perfect masterpiece of scifi cinema (there are jumps in logic here and there, the odd bit of dodgy CGI, and it throws in a bunch of scifi ideas you will have seen in other movies) but if you liked the first film you will almost certainly like this one too. Just sit back and enjoy the crazy ride. Two fun movies from Grillo this year then (WHEELMAN being the other). This was time well spent.
Liked the out-takes at the end though, quite funny.
Okay for 'when you've got nothing better to watch'.
