"I want to take a moment to thank you for providing the perfect text, for my debut Seminar in Broadcasting class. The chapters and study guides were invaluable, and the students seemed to really like the combination of traditional teaching/interaction and in-studio 'labs' where they put the ideas from the chapters - about formatics, news, commercials, generator/reactor host teams, etc. - into practice. Although I also assigned a second text, Beyond Powerful Radio became the class bible. Much appreciated." --Rich Appel, Adjunct Professor, Seton Hall University and Felician College; Contributing Writer, Billboard

"Valerie Geller has just saved me hours of time, maybe even days. People who are interested in launching a career in talk radio frequently approach me for advice and insight. This is flattering and I'm always honored and happy to help. From now on I can share a few keen insights and conclude with, "and before you do anything else, get a copy of Beyond Powerful Radio by Valerie Geller." Done and done! It's tempting to call Beyond Powerful Radio the bible of personality radio, but that's not quite accurate. It's more like The Boy Scout Handbook of personality radio, a practical guide with specific techniques for creating effective radio and managing a personality-driven radio station. While Beyond covers the waterfront, from hiring to voice technique to air checking to emergency broadcasting to promotion to sales to websites to research, the book is at its best when it's focused on Geller's real passion: Helping personalities create emotionally resonant spoken-word radio. At the core of the veteran consultant's philosophy is the importance of storytelling and her three cornerstone tenets: "Tell the Truth, Make it Matter and Never be Boring."--Radio-Info.com

New material is provided on: show prep, interview techniques, news, integrating radio and television, promotion and airchecking techniques."--Radiomagonline.com

I'm a radio professional for 25+ years and most of that at national broadcasting level.
The book really gets into the core of what has made radio a success for decades ... communicating with people, how to make a powerful connection with each listener, and how to keep them hooked to your every word. Now that music is so ubiquitous the presenter/announcer role is more important than it ever was. If you want to succeed you need to be the type of radio personality who is an addictive "must-listen". This book will give you the tools to be that person.
To get this kind of training from a person with this level of experience would cost you thousands. The price of the book is paltry in comparison! I recommend this to everyone ... not just people in radio but anyone mass communicating using radio, television or dare I say, the internet!
But as you can see from it's title, this book isn't just about radio. It's about effective communication and story-telling. So, whether you're a radio DJ, an internet marketer looking for tips on presenting better, or a business person who has to make presentations to investors/the board, then this book will help you with all of that... and more.
Geller's style isn't to preach. She's much more about encouragement. Encouraging you to achieve more, to do it better and to do it without even noticing it.
Effective communication comes from within and this book will help you accomplish that. In fact, just think about the title for a moment... Beyond Powerful Radio. Doesn't that tell you that isn't just some book about radio? :)

Well, it does and it doesn't. The book is very clearly oriented to commercial radio and talk radio in particular.
But the elements of creating a successful podcast or internet radio (or, increasingly, video) show are common and Ms. Geller covers these elements in copious, almost suffocating detail. In short, "Beyond Powerful Radio" live up to its hype. Geller draws on her own experiences and those of dozens of other broadcasters. The book is fun to read just because it provides insight into the broadcast radio business.
Many of the sections will be superfluous to many, if not most, internet broadcasters. But some of the sections are precious, such as those on developing your voice, show prep and, particularly, promotion and marketing. The internet is a blessing in that it gives anyone the opportunity to broadcast their message - but you still have to develop an audience that knows you exist and will listen to your message. The book is very short on internet specific techniques for audience building, but you can still learn from the examples Geller provides of how broadcast stations do it.
The book has so many contributors and attributions that it sometimes feels disjointed, but the overall effect, in a way, is like attending a breakout session at a seminar and hearing ideas offered at a fast pace.
As noted, my interest was attracted because I thought this might be helpful in creating a podcast series I am planning.
My interest has paid off here: this is an excellent book for the novice broadcaster, over the air or on the internet.
Yes, this book is geared toward terrestrial radio talent and certain sections like "formatics" may be less applicable to podcasters. This, however, is not the majority of the information. The core advice in this book can be applied by anyone from teachers and public speakers to podcasters and radio hosts.
My only quibble is with the price. While it may be much cheaper than attending a seminar by the author, purchasing an e-book for >$31 was a big leap of faith. I think that this is the most expensive kindle book that I have ever purchased. In the end, I'm glad that I did and wholeheartedly recommend it to others.
Beyond Powerful Radio includes give and take, and differing points of view and advice. It's all meant to bring out the best conversations from those of us who talk for a living--or communicate to make a buck And, it's meant to get us to communicate in a way that is attractive not only to the masses, but to our friends and co-workers. Valerie's book truly goes beyond Powerful Radio -- a place we all need to reach as our world creates, and uses different pipelines to transmit and receive messages. It's meant to help the managers of communications companies relate to their creative teams-you'll find the chapters on reviewing your on-air staff's work very useful. And, if you are air-staff, you'll find material that will help you relate to the business side of where you work.
The book updates Valerie's previous editions, and does move the reader to think about communications beyond what they think they know. It's not a quick how-to-compendium. It's a great study of working, re-working, improving, criticizing, and re-shaping what you've got, think you know, into something more. This book is NOT for the hurry-up and get it done tomorrow types. It is for those who are serious about thinking about communications. I recommend you buy a few copies hand it out to friends, and discuss it amongst yourselves. If you teach online courses, community or advanced degree classes, in any field associated with communications-ask Focal Press for the Instructor Manuel. Yes, there is one. You'll thank me later.

However, I was hoping for more about creating a podcast that is up a level from the average podcast. Instead, the information was more general Internet than podcasting or online broadcasting specific. While I learned from some similarities to radio, I hope the next edition (or a separate book) will address podcasting and online audio production more specifically.
Update:: I would have given this book a 4-star rating because there is comprehensive information on creating a radio show. But I have to give it a 3-star rating because it weighs heavily into radio and glosses over basics for internet radio and podcasting.
