This glossy, highly illustrated work draws on fields beyond contemporary art - hence the title. The author has a great curator's eye and each entry teaches you something you something new. My absolute favourite Celeste Boursier-Mougenot work 'From Here to Ear' is included, which is great since the ephemeral nature of the work means it is hard to explain its otherworldly beauty unless you've experienced it. This book at least gives you something to reach for on the bookshelf as you enthuse at your guests/victims. It is the sort of book that you keep as a reference - a great one to dip in and out of again once you've read the whole thing. I enjoyed it immensely.

This is a beautiful, well put-together book. The artists have been chosen with great care and the commentaries are insightful without straying into the self-satisfied rhetoric that so often ruins art commentaries. The photographs are of a really good quality too. It's written so that both newcomers and modern art conneiseurs will get a great deal out of it. Very clever!

The author has chosen a very diverse and interesting group of artists, including both established and emerging artists. It has been quite interesting learning about artists who are younger and not as well-known. I wish the text on each artist was a bit longer but, as it is a survey book, we get a nice glimpse of each artist's work.

A fascinating overview of unique contemporary artists

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book: the diversity of artists and ideas presented is really remarkable. I think that both utter laymen and people who are very versed in contemporary art would find the book very interesting exactly because of the diversity of the material: for the former group - i.e. people with limited prior exposure to contemporary art - this is a perfect way to get broad exposure and understand what's out there. And for a more artistically sophisticated reader, this can deepen their understanding of major themes and interconnectedness of contemporary ideas. Personally, I know very little about contemporary art, so for me this book was like a window allowing me to peak into this world. I loved the photographs of the art and the essays that go along with those that give the context and the background. Highly recommended - it's a hidden gem!
