Sometime the album sounds like a musical experiment. Big ideas that you feel could unwind into epic musical masterpieces, but yet only last a couple of minutes. The album leaves you asking for more. But maybe this is the idea! I understand there is a "album" as opposed to this "mini-album" coming out over the summer. It is certainly refreshing to hear music of this originality, coming out of what unfortunately has becoming an ailing indie/alteratative/guitar driven/call it what you will scene. I've seen them live too! They played support to the Bluetones in Liverpool this year, and they were brilliant, with a Stone Roses/Charlatans/Smiths sound (rather spooky for a band from Chicago!), which doesn't show itself here very much. Maybe we'll hear it on the "proper" album! Looking forward to it. This is to be recommended to anyone who wants to hear something fresh but easy on the ear.

This is a great album full of short, tuneful tracks. It weighs in at 30mins but it is an eventful 30 minitues. I saw them live at leeds and they were great they mix gutair, strings, keybord and great lyrics. If you like a tuneful laidback sound, buy this.

HASH(0x9f799084) out of 5 stars beyond better 2 Aug. 2000

This is an incredible CD. These two handsome, intelligent, creative, talented men, (regardless of who their father is), have created an album that transcends a full array of musical styles. From the exceedingly cathcy "Cold Fingers" to the sensitive "I'm over and I know it", to the brilliant "Healthy and Handsome", these brothers surpass single style music. They show their musical range from start to finish. After hearing this CD, I was lucky enough to hear them live. It doesn't get better than this.

But worth every penny. An amazing album recorded on a shoestring budget, Biosphere is both spacey yet rocking, smart yet accessible. You have to hear it to believe it.
Also check out their album "Maroon," which was produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths, etc.)

Why these fellas aren't bigger I have no idea. This album is sad, full of flangy guitars and and great harmonies and just the kinda stuff you want to wallow in on a grey saturday afternoon. The opening strums just sum it up. Blang bla blang blang blang blang .... and then a build-up, drums, there's a plan. Fantastic. And as somebody said, they get away with using the word "biosphere" in a song and they pull it off. Brilliant, guys. Please play in Chicago soon. Don't be misled by the terrible cover art and raygun space theme. This isn't about space or science fiction. It's about girls. If the Liars Club stuff was their reflection on druggy debauchery in Chitown, this is a more wisened couple of guys still perturbed by the chicas. I'd pay a hundred dollars for this album if I had no other option. It's that good.

I hate to say it. I guess I'm showing my age, but I prefer the Dad's work (Jimmy Webb). Of course, some of his early recordings didn't reflect his absolute talent, so I'll keep looking.
