After the slightly un polished firewind comes a fully rounded masterpiece of a guitarist at his best.
Soaring uitar solos combined with quiter pieces prove that Uli Jon is rounded.
The title track "The night the master comes" is worth the expense alone.

As a ferocious rock/rock guitar fan, if there was one album I would like to promote to the world it is 1985's Beyond The Astral Skies. For me this record belongs in the superstar category and should be celebrated as much as the other great rock albums. It should be a multi-million seller. It is one of the All-Time Classics!!!

The question is why isn't it?

The songs are wonderfully original and melodic, the vocals are lavish and Uli's masterful guitar is just sensational, so fluid with extraordinary textural delight.

Beyond The Astral Skies is beautifully constructed, each piece shifting in mood and tone, finishing with the gloriously anthemic 'Son of Sky' finale. The Night the Master Comes seems to come from the stars, What is Love and Why? are guitar juice, I'll Be There is magnetic, Return (Chant of Angels) is a delight that makes you feel like you're in a German cathedral city, Icebreaker and I'm a River take you places you could never imagine were possible, Angel of Peace is unique balladry and then Eleison strikes you with it's 5 centuries of guitar in 7 minutes. Magnificent!!!

Certainly, as a guitarist Uli Jon Roth is in the first rank of players. While he combines classical and Hendrix influences, ultimately his style is his own. And here he is thrilling to listen to.

So why isn't it the celebrated album I think it should rightly be?

I think the first reason is the power of the rock music press with its negative views. Sadly too many fans are too influenced by the opinions of the press rather than following their own experience. For example, it has come to be accepted wisdom that Uli's vocals are poor. I disagree strongly. Yes his style comes across as Gandalf the Grey but I find this very effective.

I have repurchased Uli Jon Roth's "Beyond the Astral Skies" to have it on CD format (after playing it on record form (!) the other day. I was as brilliant as I remembered and may just be one of the best concept albums ever (see RUSH 2111, Queen II etc
Uli has a gift in song writing and guitar playing -something you hardly evry see combined (Ywingie Malsteen for example!!) A brilliant guitarist and the songs blend into each other perfectly. Very hippy ish I know but this is well worth listening to as the songs will be in your head (in a good way) for days -I especially loved the operatic parts but if you are into your guitar music then this is a must. Beware tho- he never repreduced this again unfortunately (bought two others which were poor cousins!!)
