Product Description

The magic on Morning Glory Circle continues as Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery), Darrin (Dick Sargent), and Endora (Agnes Moorehead) return in Bewitched - The Complete Sixth Season. Notable for being Dick Sargent's first season as Darrin. Samantha, a powerful member of the society of witches that has lived apart from (and disdained) humanity for many centuries, falls in love with a mortal, Darrin Stephens. Much to the disgust of most of her family, she vows to give up witchcraft and become an ordinary suburban housewife, raising a family (bearing Tabitha and Adam). Never able to give up her heritage completely, the friction between the matriarchal, moneyless society of her birth and the patriarchal, capitalist society of modern advertising drives the comedy over eight seasons and 256 episodes, from 1964 to 1971.

Well 2008 saw Elizabeth Montgomery finally get her star on the Hollywood walk of fame and the release of the sixth season of Bewitched on DVD. Major downside of this season was the replacement of Dick York with Dick Sargent, after Dick York's chronic back pain became too severe for him to film. Ironically Dick Sargent was originally cast as Darrin Stevens but due to other commitments the part was given to Dick York, who made it his own. Sargent isn't the same calibre of actor as York, and he looks so similar to York it's all a bit eerie, but at least he tries and some-one had to take over the role of Darrin. Dick York was bedridden for much of the remainder of his life, from where he founded 'Acting for Life', a private charity to help the homeless and others in need. In the end Sargent just swaps over from York with no comment, despite the possibility that a 'magical' storyline reason could have been used for the difference in appearance.

My daughter [14] has all five of Dick York's Bewitched seasons, and for her he will always be the real Darrin. Still as she has watched the first 5 seasons of Bewitched to death, she decided that any new Bewitched is better than nothing. However, unlike York's first five seasons, she hasn't totally taken to the 6th season [as Darrin's just not 'right'], and months on she still hasn't watched all of the episodes. To be honest, although the Bewitched production team were starting to run out of ideas, there's still much to enjoy though. All the other cast members are present: Sam/Serena, Endora, Tabitha, Uncle Arthur, Maurice, Dr Bombay, the Kravitzes, and the Tates. Plus Tabitha's brother Adam is born, Esmeralda the shy maid materializes [sneezing magic as she moves] and there's guest stars such as Henry Gibson and Jack Cassidy.

Season 6 is the first season of Bewitched to have Dick Sargent in the role of Darrin. Dick Sargent's Darrin is a different Darrin to that portrayed by Dick York, and the difference in style is hard to adjust to when you are used to Dick York.

However, once you do get used to Dick Sargent he is entertaining in his own right, and indeed adds a fresh element to the show after five seasons with Dick York.

By this point it's clear that the writing team were running out of story ideas, and there are a number of "remakes" in this season, some of which very closely resemble episodes in earlier seasons. However, the presence of the "new" Darrin does put a different spin on them.

The quality of episodes in this season is mixed, although generally even the below average quality Bewitched episodes are still worth watching, and there are still some excellent episodes in this season. Overall I don't think that the average quality of episodes in this season is that much lower than in previous seasons.

Overall I don't think that you should be discouraged from buying this season by the "new" Darrin. The series still retains the old Bewitched magic, and there are still loads of laughs and enjoyment to be had from watching this season.

This is another classic sitcom from the early days and I don't understand why it is not being shown or repeated on any of the 100s of TV channels that we can have and can access today. The DVD is excellent with good sound and picture quality.

Samantha gives birth to a healthy baby boy, whom they called Adam. Maurice was not very happy that the baby was not named after him.

A shy maid named Esmeralda (who is a witch) now works for Samantha and Darrin. Her magic seems to be fading and every time she sneezes a tree or animal or even a person out of a book appears out of nowhere! She is in some way a replacement character for Aunt Clara. Esmeralda doesn't seem to be too fond of Darrin.

Dick Sargent is very good as the new Darrin. I don't know why so many people dislike him. Maurice give's Darrin a magic watch that gives him magic powers. Darrin at first likes having powers but gives back the watch when he sees how unhappy Samantha is be coming. He later see's a painting of Samantha's great aunt (who looks just like Samantha)! Darrin is worried about how Samantha will look exactly same in the next 30 years when he is an old man.I am not a 100% sure if that woman in the painting really is her great aunt. Endora says Leonardo da Vinci painted that portrait.

Uncle Arthur turns Tabitha's pet rabbit into a beautiful Play boy bunny and becomes super man thanks to Dr Bombay. Tabitha turns a 32 year old salesman into a 9 year old boy! She also creates her very own Samantha who gives her everything she wants.

Darrin's mother finds out Samantha is a witch! Samantha must use magic to make her think the doctor has been giving her the wrong pills.

Serena is up to her old tricks. She try's to find a band to sing for a advert on TV and a man falls in love with her. Serena must convince him that she is not Samantha. She also does Endora's dirty work in one episode.
The stories are still great and funny.

If you've ever seen any of the episodes of Bewitched and laughed then this is for you! It's amazing, fun, entertaining and great comedy. Even 40 something years later this is still as funny as always with funny and likable/lovable characters. It's charming and entertaining and at this low price it's a bargain! If you've never seen it then where have you been? This is one not to be missed!!
