4.0 out of 5 stars Give a good heart rate average using an analogue chest strap. Basic.

4 star product. Does not excel at anything. Photo shows the Beurer PM25 on the left (old sigma fit watch to the right). I have 4 pulse meter watches, the Tunturi exercise bike, 2 pulse oximeters, and over 2000 readings over 20 years to base this review of the Beurer on. On the plus side it works and gives an accurate pulse reading when your pulse is level and stable. It has a real time watch function and records the time spent “in the zone”, below, and above the programmable lower and upper limits. The sum of these 3 values adds up to exactly the total duration of exercise (might seem obvious, but not all watches do). There is no information on how the fat burn or calorie consumption is calculated. It seems to show about half the calories burnt compared to other watches (kcal=7.0 x Average Heart rate (BPM) x Duration (min)), other devices I have have a factor of 13.98 for my age/weight etc. It looses a star in each category for a number of reasons. It looses about a second a day (so it’ll be out by a minute after 2 months. The heart rate shown seems to ‘lag’ the actual value, and err of the low side when it’s changing. When the heart rate is constant the value is correct, but as your heart rate increases it’s slow to show the increase, but quick to show the decline. This does mean that this watch never shows “excursions”, which are readings that are wrong by quite a few bpm, but only briefly (I.e. never jumps from 140 to 160 for 3 seconds, then back to 140). As such the average appears to be a full percentage too low (this may not appear to be huge, but saying you’ve done a 4 minute mile when it’s actually 4 minutes and 3 seconds is bad). Since my exercise statistics depend on very small margins this 1% error results in over 10% error in my exercise rankings. There is no storage of heart rate during recovery (my sigma fit gives hr at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mins after stopping exercise) and the 1 minute recovery rate is an important factor. It has no memory to store last few readings. Confusingly it says stop when stopped (so pressing the button will start), and when it says run (because it’s running) the button will stop it (I.e. running and stopped would be better words to display). The seconds are shown in a smaller font size than the hours or minutes, which I don’t like, since it’s the seconds I usually want to view/register first. The buttons don’t give a good positive feed back when pressed, consequently I have to press them with some force to make sure they’ve registered, and that slightly increases the latency. This might only be me, and may make them more reliable when wet and as the watch ages. I like the analogue strap, in fact I can use my Polar or Sigma strap with this watch, so I wear only 1 strap and ALL my pulse meters by different manufacturers work. I bought this watch because I want (a new one) that will work if/as my others become defunct/non-functioning. Unfortunately for me the value: (Average Heart Rate) x (Duration), which I call “Total Heart Beats” and use, and have used for 20 years, this critical value to rank a particular set of exercise, is less accurate with this watch then any other I have.
