4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and credible 30 Mar. 2012
By C. Mank - Published on Amazon.com

I was between books and willing to look at something new, when I happened upon Bucchianeri's "Between A Smile And A Tear." I'm an avid reader, so my standards are high. This one didn't disappoint.

Writer Jack Waters has just tasted his first success, and is sorting out his troubled marriage, when he's sucker punched--seemingly out of the blue. What follows is a highly credible quest for answers by a man who slowly realizes that he must reexamine everything he trusts and believes in, complicated by his being unwittingly snared into a brutal criminal underworld.

I found this a solidly entertaining story. (It wouldn't make a bad movie. IKR! I should wash my mouth out with soap now!) The characters are fresh, complicated and yet authentic. The detail is rich enough to allow you to paint the scene in your imagination. Bucchianeri has a way with suspense--hooking you, drawing you in a little, letting you play out a bit, then drawing you in some more--keeping the line just so taut. Chapter by chapter, you weigh each potential outcome as new details surface.

In the end, he wraps it up credibly. All in all, a satisfying read! Bucchianeri is on my must-read list now.
5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery in the City 28 Sept. 2014

Robert created a work that truly was a page turner. I could not put it down. All throughout the mystery, I kept wondering what the "secret" was that Sam had to tell. I, as a San Francisco native raised in Daly City/Westlake, enjoyed envisioning the locales Robert described as part of my past as I devoured the novel. Throughout the book, Robert kept the pace of the story running at a fast pace enticing the reader to read rapidly to keep up with the main character, Jack, and the rest of the cast. The components of the work demonstrated the extensive research that Robert conducted to capture the flavor of the city and the positive and negative aspects of public safety personal. Tremendous quantity of twists and turns were incorporated into the book to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Excellent work and can't wait to pick up the next novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into it. 3 Aug. 2013
By Dog Mom - Published on Amazon.com

Sorry but the beginning did not grab me. Jack was SUCH a cliche! An alcoholic writer with one best selling book who couldn't write sober? PLZ. The amount of money he supposedly got on a two-book deal was ludicrous. The author needs to start reading PW for a reality check. I almost stopped reading when the over-dressed chick picked him up in the coffee house but crossed my fingers and kept reading. Nope, it turned out exactly as I expected. I gave up and deleted this novel from my Kindle.
4.0 out of 5 stars Between a Smile and a Tear 7 Dec. 2013

Between a Smile and a Tear by Robert Bucchianeri

Jack Waters is an alcoholic Author trying to stay sober. One day he wakes up in a motel and finds himself being blackmailed. His wife and son leave him and he is in despair. Determined to find out who is blackmailing him and why, he encounters many unsavory characters, but no matter what he faces he is determined to get to the truth.

A mystery/suspense with interesting characters, twists, turns and secrets. Many times I thought I knew where (it) was going, only to be shocked by a new turn or secret. A great read. Suspense/mystery lovers should enjoy Between a Smile and a Tear.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't love it... 12 Mar. 2013
By Peggy Pati - Published on Amazon.com

Jack Waters is a writer, a recovering alcoholic, father and husband. Life is going okay until the day he is sitting having coffee, meets a fan, wakes up in a motel room, does not remember anything, and his whole life is turned upside down. Although it had decent reviews and the ending did surprise me, I just couldn't sink my teeth into this book.
