It has long been a truism that the film musicals of Hollywood's Golden Era were big, splashy and empty. Exceptions aside, it is alleged, the films were big on spectacle and small on heart. One of the worst offenders in this is said to have been Betty Grable. Like Esther Williams, her talents were in something other than acting, and movies built around her had to take that into account.

Then Fox releases a film like this on DVD. 'My Blue Heaven' is the only one of the Grable-Dailey musicals that I have seen, and it is a revelation. Grable and Dailey play Kitty and Jack Moran, married entertainers trying to start a family. Unusually for a musical, it deals in deep emotion, with Grable's character suffering a miscarriage early in the film which leaves her (she thinks) unable to have children. The plot, then, is based around the couple's attempts to adopt a child. This gives rise to some really heart-wrenching scenes, particularly harsh when juxtaposed with the normally cheerful, ub-beat songs 'My New Yorker'; ''Deductible'; Don't rock the Boat' and others.

Dan Dailey and Betty Grable turn in a fine performance, while the supporting cast are superb. Mitzi Gaynor appears in her first film role as Kitty Moran's understudy, particularly funny, as the film features a parody of 'South Pacific', including Dan Dailey doing an impersonation of Ezio Pinza which had me in stitches. All in all, a great film and well worth watching. It has the songs and the emotion.

The extras are few, presumably because no additional material survives, or could be recorded. There is an audio commentary by Drew Casper and stills gallery, and that is it. Still, the film more than makes up for it, and I'm waiting the other Grable-Dailey films to come out.

Following the successes of the 1947 'Mother Wore Tights' and the 1948, 'When My Baby Smiles at Me', Fox continued with the teaming of Betty Grable and Dan Dailey in 'My Blue Heaven'. This is a more straightforward and undemanding exercise for the leads. The husband and wife Vaudeville act go through the trauma of the adoption process only to find they are expecting one of their own. The plot is predictable but the atmosphere of the time is well-captured and enjoyable. The title song was written by George Whiting and Walter Donaldson and sung by Dailey and Grable. The rest of the score was by Ralph Blane and Harold Arlen. It was notable for introducing movie audiences to Mitzi Gaynor whose best number is 'Live Hard. Work Hard. Love Hard'. Other songs include 'I Love a New Yorker' and 'It's Deductible'.

Filmed in glorious technicolor, this is a fairly typical example of 20th Century Fox's output of the time. A period piece that is both entertaining and relaxing.

Lots of good old standards with an innocuous story line
My favourite track is Friendly Islands, which I've never heard before. At my age this is a rare pleasure!

Brilliant songs and dancing. Took me back to my young days. I'm an old romantic who can't find comfort in violence

Betty Grable does a fine job in this film. I bought the DVD because Dan Dailey was a favourite of my Grandmother's and I wanted to see for myself what the attraction was. I still don't know. In this, he seems to be half asleep much of the time, quite lacking in sparkle, and although the story is fairly routine I feel that it could still have been enjoyable with some other male lead with a bit more life in them. Pity.
