By M. Joyce TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 13 Jun. 2011
Format: Audio CD
This is a marvellous disc. Herr Quasthoff can do little wrong as far as I am concerned. I love the warmth and sincerity of his noble, slightly gravelly bass-baritone voice and I especially appreciate the way in which he inflects the sung text; as he himself puts it in an interesting sleeve-note, what matters for him is the "symbiosis between text and music". Here we are treated to the most famous sacred arias for bass voice, ranging from Bach and Händel to Haydn and Mendelssohn. Herr Quasthoff is, I would suggest, a non-pareil as far as the singing of Bach is concerned, but his singing of Mendelssohn is just as persuasive. Elijah's great arias are wonderfully well performed and he has made me eager to hear a complete recording of the composer's lesser-known work, "Paulus". The arias from "The Creation" and "The Seasons" are perfectly done and offer serious competition to the versions by Walter Berry, a personal favourite of mine. Indeed, my only cavil is with the Händel, where his English is not quite idiomatic enough. Strangely enough, I don't have the same problem with the bonus track, "Swing low, sweet chariot", which I thought I would hate, but which I love. The accompaniments from the esteemed Staatskapelle Dresden under Sebastian Weigle are very fine and Sibylla Rubens is a radiant soprano foil in the duet from the "Christmas Oratorio".

High points on this marvellous album are for me the Bach and Mendelssohn-sung with subtlety, grace and beauty. Some reviewers have dismissed the rendition of 'Swing Low,Sweet Chariot'-I think that's unfair as it's a very moving interpretation.I am biased though as I love this man's voice-next month I'm travelling to Essen to see him and Sophie von Otter in a concert of Jazz,Blues and Classik music-I am privileged.

HASH(0x9265add0) out of 5 stars An album of Baroque singing to celebrate over 2 May 2011
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It's too bad that Amazon has consigned reviews of this outstanding Baroque album to the MP3 download. Quasthoff has been the leading bass-baritone in Bach for a long time, and he would have accumulated a catalog on DG in this area if he hadn't preceded it with a number of Bach cantata recordings for Hanssler Classics. (Since not all of those performances were first-rate in other regards, it's worth seeking out the "best of" collection devoted to Quasthoff's solos.) It took some time for him to reach star status, and one can detect touches of vocal wear and insecurity in this CD from 2006, recorded when the singer was 47. Quasthoff sings with intrepid courage, taking his voice to its very limits of expression and often displaying how high he can go. The results are thrilling, as they are with a similarly passionate Baroque singer, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, but Quasthoff appears to be paying the price today with his current vocal troubles.

Here we can sit back and ignore the shadows to come. This is superlative singing of the greatest religious composer who ever lived, fleshed out with selections by Handel and Haydn. The only thrice-familiar number is "The trumpet shall sound" from the Messiah, which is sung with fervor and splendor, not to mention a thrilling high notes tossed in as embellishment. Quasthoff's approach encompasses the full humanity of each aria, chorale, or duet, in keeping with the all-embracing humanity of Bach, who cannot be confined inside the category of religious. The Dresden Staatskapelle, adopting "authentic" style, still plays with beautiful expression. Altogether an exemplary production, right down to DG's sonics and the knowing conducting by Sebastian Weigle.

Here's the complete program:

Christmas Oratorio BWV248 : Part One - For the first Day of Christmas No.8 Aria : Grosser Herr o starker Konig / Part Three - For the third Day of Christmas No.29 Duett : Herr dein Mitleid dein Erbarmen. Die Jahreszeiten HobXXI:3 : Der Fruhling Vom Widder strahlet jetzt - Schon eilet froh / Der Winter Erblicke hier betorter Mensch. The Creation - Die Schopfung - sung in German : Und Gott sprach ... Rollend in schaumenden Wellen (Haydn). Elijah op.70 - sung in German : Herr Gott Abrahams / Es ist genug! So nimm nun Herr. Paulus op.36 : Gott sei mir gnadig (Mendelssohn).
