Note: before you watch my video please note Amazon compresses the hell out of good video, the recording the camera makes look pretty good, the images are clear and smooth.
The Besteker camcorder is a traditionally shaped HD camcorder with a flip out touch screen.
It records 1080P HD video and 24 megapixel photographs to a full sized SD card located in the bottom of the recorder next to the battery.
Movie files are MOV and photo files are JPG
The camera comes with a USB charge cable, HDMI cable and small catty pouch to protect the camera, it also comes with a Besteker external shotgun microphone in a separate box. There is no room for the microphone in the pouch unfortunately.
It has sockets for HDMI output, it comes with a cable to connect it to the TV, it also has a mini USB socket, this is for charging the battery and to transfer SD Card data over.
When the USB cable is plugged in and the camera is switch on it can be used as either a storage device so you can copy any files off the card, or it can be used as a web camera.
As a web camera the zoom is disabled as is the built in screen.
It works well as a webcam on my Apple Mac computer and gives a clear 1080P image.
The built in LED light is useful for poorly lit areas, near the end of the video shows it in a very dark storage cupboard with and without the LED light.
In conclusion if you are looking for a cheap camcorder that gives decent 1080P recordings and easy file transfer you wont go far wrong with the Besteker.
The camcorder is supplied with a nice carry case with shoulder strap and belt loop. It has a USB lead for transferring footage (instead of taking the SD card out). It has a HDMI lead for viewing footage on your TV. It has a remote control so that you can stop and start video etc from a distance and it has wifi so you can view the footage remotely on your mobile. Best of all, it is supplied with an external powered microphone that will allow professional quality audio recordings to go along with your video footage.
Operating the camera is as simple as opening the screen. The camera immediately turns on and defaults to being in video mode ready for you to start recording. To start recording or stop recording, you press the button on the back of the camcorder which is in the perfect position for your thumb once you hand is through the hand strap. The camcorder has a 16x digital zoom function which is easily accessible on the top of the device. Even when fully zoomed in, there is no real loss of video quality because it is so good to start with.
The flip out screen hides several buttons that are visible once the screen is open. These are Power, Mode, Settings, Light and Display. Power turns the camcorder off and on. Mode changes the mode of the camcorder and this is where you would select Photo mode if you wanted to take stills. Settings allows you to change things like the date and time, white balance, turn the wifi off and on etc. Display will blank the display to save power. But Light is very useful: When pressed, it turns on a bright white LED on the front of the camera so that you can record footage in total darkness. Very handy!
Talking of the screen, it is touch sensitive. Once you press Mode (for example), you have a screen that says Video, Camera, Playback, Setup, Slideshow & Wifi. To select one of these, you simply press of the appropriate icon on the screen. Once in a selection, there is a back button you can press so it makes the whole process of navigating the camera very easy.
So it’s very simple to use, it has good battery life and it takes excellent quality videos. However, one of the things I was most impressed with was the supplied external powered microphone. The camcorder records pretty decent audio through the inbuilt mic. As good as any mobile phone would. But the supplied mic takes it to a whole new level. It has a sensitivity setting that allows the gain to be turned up by 10db (every 3db is a doubling of power so that is over 3 times more sensitive that standard). It is directional and has an excellent foam windshield to cut down on wind noise. The mic attaches to the “hot shoe” adapter on top of the camcorder and plugs in to the rear. Once attached it turns the camera in to a semi-professional bit of kit. It becomes great for family weddings, outdoor events, wildlife footage – anything where you need to pick up something out of a noisy environment or pickup something in the distance.
So, if you have only ever used a mobile phone to record your video footage, this camcorder will be a revelation! If, like me, you remember the camcorders of old, this is that sort of thing, but fully digital, very light-weight and with super audio from that external mic. Just a few years ago, you could imaging paying several thousand pounds for something like this. It’s great!
This has such a lot of features packed into it that it's hard to know where to begin. I don't want to rewrite the user guide so will just summarise what the camcorder is capable of and offer my view on each. Firstly, in terms of video, there are various resolutions up to 1080P. Whilst lacking the 4K abilities of some video systems, they are incredibly memory hungry and personally I make most recordings in 720P for the ease of editing. For most YouTube videos, 720P is quite acceptable, I find I only really require higher if I'm using a particularly large screen. Rendering and upload/download times are vastly less for lower res videos. 4K takes a truly ridiculous time to render anything with much movement in it, besides using vastly more space for even short videos. My test video shows a garden scene through glass which looks very sharp, an action scene in a sports hall, and a colour changing lamp. Video quality is quite acceptable in each case.
Stills can be taken up to 24mPixel. I'm sure this is an interpreted rather than true resolution but this is of limited interest to me personally as I'm interested in the video features. Quality wise, stills seemed fine for the relatively unchallenging pictures I took to test it.
Out of the box, it requires little preparation, just remove the plastic protective films, insert the battery and memory card, and plug in the USB cable. The cable is pretty substantial and way thicker than the cheap versions that come with most USB devices. One word of warning, the terminals on the battery are also film protected, remember to remove this or, like me, you won't be charging anything for the first couple of hours!
Once charged, power up by opening the pull out door (having removed the lens cover ideally!) and it fires up with a welcoming jingle. Buttons on the side reveal various functions, enable settings to be changed, the playing back of recorded videos, etc. The display is also a touch screen, a great idea. So pressing the menu button for example, displays resolution, colour, exposure, and so on, which can each be selected by touching the icon on the screen. Pressing the mode button allows the choice of video, camera, playback, etc.
Three further buttons turn on/off the display, the built in light, and the power.
On the top there's a zoom for telephoto and wide, and a still snap button, and on the back is the start/stop record button, and a flap which conceals mic, USB and HDMI sockets (an HDMI cable is included). Also on top is a hot shoe, which enables the external mic to be mounted, and on the underside is a standard tripod mount socket and a flap concealing battery and SD card compartments.
First impression is that it is decently weighty, unlike many of the cheaper models available. Though not perfect for a lefthander like me, it fits really well in the (right!) hand and the main buttons are where you would expect them to be to be up and recording quickly. The hand strap is perfectly positioned and appropriately adjustable.
The flip out screen can be rotated round to point in any direction, with click stops every 90 degrees.
Also included is a remote to enable control of zoom, record, pause, stills and various playback functions.
Sound is acceptable at the price point. The optionally used external mic is a suitable improvement but it depends on what you happen to be videoing as to whether this is the better option. Personally, if I'm recording my local musicians circle I'd consider going for something higher spec, but certainly for most uses, including outside recordings, it will more than suffice.
I won't run through the other features, such as white balance, metering and the other technical stuff. Those I've tried all do what they should, and provide sufficient control for the enthusiast to keep them happy.
This is a very good camcorder, I find it hard to fault in any way. Some features I've not yet tested, such as battery life on record for example. But for now, top marks, this beats anything else I've tried for years.
