Seemingly unable to see a future for himself away from the gang, it’s as if he’s taken a snapshot of his life and decided it should be preserved as it is. This is, in part, down to old friendships, but also because he enjoys the validation being gang leader brings him. As a result, his greatest fear isn’t street violence, but the prospect of fundamental change brought about by the fact that young teens tend to grow up and move on.
The final stages of the novel afford Paul an opportunity to redefine how he will proceed in life, but of course he is gang leader and there are expectations of him that could narrow his choices.
The Best Year of Our Lives is an immersive, richly detailed read that puts you there at the heart of the gang as they hang around the youth club and the streets of West London in those far-off days.
The times memories came flooding back of the wonderful, free and innocent life we youngsters were able to lead at that time.
A great book, story and a must read for anyone who was a teenager in the 70s.
