5.0 out of 5 stars much underrated sax player 28 Oct. 2000
By Andrew Walsh - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I know it becomes difficult to judge music by star systems when every reviewer seems to give 5 stars for all recordings....I guess we tend to review the recordings we like!
Just one other review of this appears here so I thought I'd give it a shot.
Wayne Shorter was (is!) one of the most important tenor/soprano sax players to have emerged from the Miles Davis era of jazz rennaisance of the 50's and 60's. He is from the Coltrane/Rollins style of hard, sharp and cool sax. This album is a thoughtful collection of Wayne's playing from the 1960's Blue Note recordings.
I think this is a wonderful selection. I particularly like "Adam's Apple" (great for budding tenor players to attempt to play along to!), but all pieces are great! His playing is exceptional - technically excellent, yet still emotional. I find a lot of jazz tends to go through the motions of chords/scales etc., devoid of feeling. Not Wayne and not here...if you like sax and have not heard Wayne's Blue Note era, get this least as good as his contemporaries yet more accessible IMHO
4.0 out of 5 stars Wayne Shorter The Blue Note Years 101... 3 April 2016

It's been nearly 30 years ago (1988), that this CD was released. & while there's been 2 & even a 3-disc European set which also focuses on the saxophonist's Blue Note recordings, this is still is great way to introduce oneself to Wayne Shorter's music as a band leader.

A number of the tunes featured here have since become standards like the opener, “Infant Eyes” (a beautiful piece which he wrote for his then infant daughter from his 1st marriage) “Footprints”, & “Water Babies (the latter 2 was later recorded by Miles Davis who band Shorter was a member in the mid-late 1960s). Also, for a 1988 CD release, the sound quality's good.

That said for a 1-disc greatest hits, this is a great way to be introduced to Wayne Shorter's music. Be for-warned- after hearing this you'll want to dug more into the music he did for the legendary jazz label- most of which is worth buying in their own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable 30 July 2012

This gem of a CD I purchased has made by life so much sweeter and enjoyable. I consider myself a Jazz Enthusiest, and this right here is what separates the casual listens of jazz to the high plains efficianado. Excellent, excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional time bomb 15 Oct. 2000

I was waiting for this superb album to come out for a long, long time! An now is my chance to review it, great! As always Shorter is superb in this Best of combining all time favorites JuJu, Adam's Apple and most of all Speak no Evil. I can't find much to say since I am so taken aback by the outstanding quality of Wayne's playing (sound and technique). Herbie is wonderful, Lee superb and Horace incredible. I don't think I will go in to more detail and remain at the level of superlatives since the music speaks for itself. Some of the tunes just well up the tears and others unleach the passion. A MUST!!
