These are enchanting stories. De la Mere's style is interesting. Each story tends to start leaving you not quite sure what is "going on" or who the main character quite "is"; yet slowly you become hooked in a way I haven't felt with other writers - totally absorbed into the world his wonderful writer weaves. The stories were written in the first half of the last century yet have aged very well indeed and still feel fresh and thoroughly entertaining. What makes them so special is that de la Mare uses each to speak to the inner person, exploring deep and meaningful aspects of life. My favourite - although they are all very good - is "Miss Duveen".
