This bargain-price 2-CD set is a splendid selection of tracks from Oscar's long career in jazz. Mainly in trio format (with bass and drums) the balance of tracks embrace duos, with Dizzy Gillespie, and quartets with Joe Pass, Stephan Grappelli and Ben Webster. A must for those new to Oscar and a wonderful memento for those who may have thrown away their old LP's.

If ever you were feeling abjectly miserable in the middle of the city in winter and then you found a little club, in a basement, a friendly light and murmur rising from the windows; inside is a warm welcome and an affable bar keep sets you up with a double Irish.

Oscar Peterson would be playing the piano and you would soon forget there was any cold or heartache outside. On here is some of the best of the music he would be playing.

You might like it.

Commentary? Why? This is Petersen! You will get what you think when you buy this album. True, there are moments that I wished he'd not made tennis courts noises, but--that's part of the performance. A good album to fill out your Oscar Petersen collection.

Although I have many Oscar Peterson LP's from the 70's and 80's covering his work both as a featured artist and accompanist I realized having listened to the sample tracks I don't have a single CD. I have taped compilations I used to play in the car - really relaxing on a long journey. I will therefore be buying this and probably will make a contribution to the statue that is proposed in Ottawa.

I began taking notice of Oscar Peterson at a very young age thanks to a relative who played his cassettes frequently. Peterson made me appreciate jazz and his easy going style often accompanied by his own low key "hum along" is a lovely memory. And here is a great way to remember some of the very best of his work, with a double album packed with jazz standards played in Peterson's own inimitable style. Often formatted as a trio, double bass and drums offer the ideal backing to Peterson's effortless mastery of the piano. This is easily accessible jazz which anyone newly exploring the genre should find easy to assimilate, and yet trying to keep up with which tangent Peterson is heading down next will also pay dividends to the deeper listener. A very pleasant compilation by a master of the piano.

While Peterson's piano playing shines out in each and every track he is let down time and again by the artists he is partnered with. This is absolutely not an album for fan's of Peterson per se, as the music included on this album is completely eccelctic, encompassing many styles - 80% of which are not to my taste. This is a very odd jazz mix album which happens to feature Peterson.

For his "best" get Nighttrain. You need hear nothing else to begin your search for more Peterson, and ignore this as it is certainly not a showcase for him, but a letdown.

Excellent value for 20 tracks of a genius pianist. The only reason it did not get a full 5 stars is that I was not too keen on the tracks featuring guests e.g. Dizzy Gillespie. Peterson himself is superb.

I,m new to jazz piano. However I can recognise Oscar Peterson a mile off.
I don,t there's anyone to touch him. His delicate touch and the way he twinkles those ivories! It too
me a while to get into the tracks of this double cd set. Then I was hooked. Drums and especially bass perfectly compliment Peterson,s style.
I can,t recommend this cd enough.
Great value, arrived on time in pristine condition.
