An excellent compilation that will surely serve you right! Mr. Allison's verse/music from back when and forward is just as relevant today. Tracks, bar 6,8 10, 12/13 & 15 were penned by Mr Allison but all of this album is a seamless, consummate nugget. 'I Don't Worry About A Thing' taught me not to overly worry about the future beyond my control, and actually changed my life. If you appreciate drum brushwork as I do then you're made.

p.s. I recently heard that Mose is still touring (80+ years). I have to be there.

Listen to Everybody Crying Mercy and then play Georgie Fame's version . Who's the daddy ? Mose Allison also influenced Van Morrison and a host of others . World weary vocals and urgent bop piano make an unusual and exciting combination . This is an intelligent compilation and probably contains everything you will ever need from this unique artist . He also provides good advice . Throughout my adult life I have had to listen to doughnuts at both work and play . They will tell you that National Service should be brought back or that cannabis is bound to lead to heroin or that the country has gone too far down the road to socialism . Mose taught me to say little but mentally sing that the doughnut's mind is on vacation but his mouth is working overtime . This has saved me a lot of grief over the years .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Classic Jazz Pianist / Performer 17 Sept. 2005
By B. Marold - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
'The Best of Mose Allison' is a re-release of a vinyl album with 8 'bonus tracks' added to the CD edition of the title. But, if you buy this, you want it for all the original, classic tracks such as 'Stop This World', 'New Parchman', 'Seventh Son', and 'Your Molecular Structure'.

I confess this review is primarily for those who are not familiar with Mose Allison and not for those Jazz audiophiles who dote on great audio quality.

Allison, to me, seems like a true immortal of Jazz, as I saw him perform at a small Jazz club in Baltimore in 1970, and he is still performing today, (or at least within the last year) with about the same quality as I remember from 35 years ago.

Allison sings and accompanys himself on the piano and strikes me as the godfather of many more recent performer / composers such as Elton John and Randy Newman. He is one of the few pre-Rock era composers whose songs have been performed by some of the great Rock supergroups such as The Who. And, when you listen to this CD, you can wish that the modern musical ethos was a little less committed to composing all your material and just a little more about performing a few 'standards' now and again.

This is just the kind of CD you need to get a good sense of Mose Allison's work.

Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great music, fair sound quality 20 Jan. 2000
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I love Mose Allison and was pleased to find so many songs that I had heard over the years on one recording. Unfortunately the quality of the recording is only fair, Allison's electric piano sounds like it is overdriving the sound board, but the music is so good that you can forgive it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Classic, Fun. 24 Jun. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

A great performer, will surprise and delight you with every song. Mose Allison came to my attention as a gift from a dear friend, just to become one of my favorite performers. Full of charm and talent, it is a mystery to me why Allison remains such a well kept secret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky and wise 25 Feb. 2005
By Bomojaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Mose Allison recorded 10 albums for Atlantic Records, and this CD compiles the best of his work from some of those albums. For the most part, it's hard to disagree with the choices. "Your mind is on vacation" is one of Moses's greatest songs ever, sung to the patrons of noisy nightclubs ("If talkin' was criminal, you'd lead a life of crime") and is a no-brainer for inclusion. Likewise with "I don't worry about a thing," "New Parchman" (a remake of his "Parchman Farm" on Prestige), and "I love the life I live." If you like Mose, you'll definitely want this CD; if you want to check out an excellent singer who sings funky and wise, give this a try. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wry Wit Plus Terrific Piano 2 Feb. 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a great introduction to Mose Allison, with the best of his work from the first half of his long career. Those who like jazz, blues and have a wry sense of humor are likely to enjoy Mose Allison. I am a big fan of his, but my success rate in turning others onto his work is pretty high as well. If you like what you hear, go for the Allison Wonderland double CD as well, which includes additional classic cuts - some from his later albums.
