Currently on offer for less than 50p, this will be the bargain of the year for anyone wishing to take a gamble on a relatively unknown but excellent band.
I loved their mini album "these songs are our only alibis" and although this is a more restrained affair it's still anthemic but in a more mature way.
The band don't seem to want to share much info about themselves on their releases and internet background is similarly sparse but what you get is mostly male vocals (Jamie i think?) with nice female backing vocals and songs (which are the most important jewels here) about life, all laid out in storytelling fashion.
The lyrics are clever/literate/obscure but all sung with feeling and although often fairly laid back there are bursts of guitar interspersed throughout. The opener "a good liar is a good storyteller" talks about The Dark Side Of The Moon's vinyl gatefold sleeve and there also appears to be a Wizard of Oz thread running through some of the tracks with mention of "we're not in Kansas anymore" & "click click, there's no place like home"?
It's not a perfect album (hence 4 stars) but there are some great songs on here e.g "firetruck" and "45 forever" to name just two but a few good-not-great ones too.
Nearly an hour of music though, mostly inspired and ferociously (in a beautiful way) displayed/delivered.

This is a simply wonderful album. Honed through numerous performances in front of their home town fans in the back's of pubs this is an almost perfect album. Generally overlooked by the music (even the Indies) it just goes to show it's hard to succeed if you come from somewhere unfashionable.

And that's the joy of this album. It's about growing up and living in a small town where there aren't any bright lights and there's no real venue for big bands and the best we can do is chain-pubs. BUT WE STILL LOVE IT. As they say in "St Crispin's Got Our Backs" - "Our Home Town's Not That Bad".

The song from BH 90210 (45 Forever) is a work of genuine song-writer's craft that desreves better than to be remembered for that.

Where ever you come from if it isn't London, Leeds or Liverpool this album will speak to you with it's clever lyrics, beautiful tunes and its mixed bag of styles.

And if you do come from such places, buy it anyway and enjoy.

It deserves your attention.

Brilliant album, collection of superb songs. They obviously have global appeal, as '45 forever' has been used on the soundtrack of an episode of the new Beverly Hills 90210. Definately recommended.
